Mixing suggestions?

That is a good suggestion, I have noticed that if you roll back the distortion to much, it sounds overly rolled off, if you put the distortion any higher then it sounds harsh, like you said. I think that a comp would definitely help. I will have to give that a shot and see what I can come up with. Do you have any suggestions for a sim of a compression pedal or what not for amp sims?

A trick I always use is to use a comp/sustainer pedal (or sim) in front of the amp sim. This gives you the sustain and allows you to back the distortion off even more, which gets rid of the harshness and sim-sound.
Nice trick Farview. Thanks. :)

When I'm not using an actual comp/sustain pedal, I'll use the line6 version that is in the pod or the one that comes with the waves GTR plugins.

Interesting, do you just bypass the amps and just use line6's comp or what?

When I use the line 6 one, it means I'm using the line6 as the amp sim. I've done several albums using the POD Pro, which has the pedal emulation built in. The only software sims I've used are the Waves GTR, the UAD-1 Nigel and the one that comes with Nuendo 5 and Cubase 6.

When I'm not using the Pod Pro, I will use the GTR pedal sim.

here is where i am right now, i just got done recording this, sounds pretty tight through my monitors and laptop speakers. this should give you all an idea of what I am after, and what I need to correct in my eq'ing.
I listened to the clip.
Ok the low mids are not tight. You can hear the swells of the low end on the toms, and the bass guitar.
