I've had a few minutes to plug the MixWiz into various inputs; phantom power required and not. Together. Also tried the POD's line input and the Gibson SG direct. Yeah!
It all sounded great through this desk.
It has some cheesey effects. But they're fun...
But fuck that. It has 16 DIRECT OUTS!!!!!
The Pres impress me and I'm used to the kind of noise floor that comes with the dbx 386!! yee hah!
Plus 6 aux sends and two other stereo outs; direct outs and effects inserts on every channel.
A really cool 8-way (9 actually) headphone mix deal that doesn't affect the actual outputs but reflects the inputs that compose the output.
Plenty of cut and gain available for what you gotta do.
This is a home recording dream machine.

Yup...

And tis why I say it blows away a Mackie in the same price range! It may cost a few bucks more, but the Mix Wizard is the closest thing one can buy to a REAL recording desk for around 1k!

Sorry to shortchange the review.
I'm talking about the Allen & Heath Mix Wizard 16:2
16 track portable mixer.

Don't Mackie's have direct outs/tape returns for every channel?

I look at tape returns as my biggie. If I can avoid having to build a patchbay for a little while, I'll be happy. That's why I like the Alesis Studio 32 and Mackie 8 Bus mixers with their built in tape returns in the back and the flip button to run them thru the fader when doing mixdowns.

Ed or anyone... how does the A&H compare to the similar Spirit models? I think it's the FX16 or something...

Ruebarb, which Mackie

Ruebarb, which Mackie? The one I'm looking at that seems in the same league as the A&H Mix Wiz reviewed in this thread is the 1604 VLZ Pro which has only 8 direct outs and no tape ins.

I agree with what you're saying about the desirability of 16 outs and 16 tape ins for use with faders, but is there anything out there that does this besides the Alesis Studio 32 in this range? And what do I give up for this feature?

See my recent post/question on this board for questions regarding comparisons of 16 ch mixers. I'd like to know better what I'm buying before I lay out near $1000 in the next week or two.
