While waiting for overdubs to be complete, I've been working on a second project, a ministudio designed to fit in a medium sized road ready case. It should be good for remote spaced stereo recording, and for overdubbed one-track-at-a-time close micing. I resolved that you have to be able to carry it in one hand (guitar in the other, backpack for other stuff, and nothing in it could be too-too expensive, no Neumanns. Read for this- nothing the home studio couldn't get along without. Anyway, this is how it came out-
Korg PXR4 Pandora 4-tracker with a total of 3 128mb cards- that's 270 track minutes in high resolution.
M-Audio DMP3- Not onlly cheap and effective, but small, even with the wall wart. Also allows me to run 2 channels into the stereo line in and record 2 tracks simultaneously.
EBTECH LLS-2 2 channel line level shifter converts the DMP3's +4 output to -10dbV, which the Korg likes much better. Also wicked small.
(2) On Stage mini booms- yeah, they're heavy, but they break down small and work much better than cheap desk stands.
(2) AKG C2000B's- The only mics I own a pair of that you can use as a spaced stereo pair, on guitar, and for vocals. I would have used Oktava MC012's, but I'm sorry, I can't really sing into them.
Stedman steel pop filter- hard to kill, sounds better to me than nylon.
Assorted cables- I actually got a pair if 10' mic cables just because they fit in the case better, and of course, a power strip.
(2) Rode Chinese-made shock mounts. Sorry, my AKG H100's are *not* expendable, and are essential studio gear.
I've been thinking about adding an RNC compressor to the mix, but for most of my purposes, compression is not necessary.
I kid you not, these basically cheap boxes get along with each other quite well, and I've been impressed eith the quality of sound I can get with them. Anybody got suggestions for improving the setup?-Richie
