Ok I'm working on recording an edgy weezeresque pop song with my band right? I've got a great distorted slight reverb sound with my Gibson LP Standard, my boss GT-3 and my Fender Twin Reverb. I tried miking it with an sm57 and it got a "bathroom" type effect to it. Yup thats right, sounded like i was playing guitar in the shower. Ok so heres my options. I have a Sm57, Sm58, Audio Technica A4040 Condenser, and AKG C 1000 (also a condenser). Which Mic do i pick? How far from the Amp should the Mic be? How loud (if this matters) should the amp be?
THanks in Advance

P.S I'm running it all threw a Mackie mixer and into a Roland VS-880XE. (Again if this matters)

From your list, the SM57 wins, hands down.

Instead of looking for a new mic, look for a way to fix your "bathroom problem." ;)

To answer some of your questions - yes, it all matters. Volume matters as far as making your amp sound the way you want it to. Mic distance matters because the farther it is away from the speaker, the more room sound it will pick up.

A "bathroom problem" sounds like you have the mic too far away from the amp, in a room with too many reflective surfaces. Put your amp in a closet full of clothes, and put the mic 1" from the speaker. If that don't fix it, then the "bathroom problem" could be a problem with your gear or configuration.

the 57 is the right way to go....

so there's got to be another problem.....

the room is obviously playing a part, IF, and i stress, IF, the mic is hearing what you're hearing.....

try close micing, right up on the grille.
move the mic, fractions of an inch, off axis, in every direction.

Listen, closely, to what the mic is hearing (requires that you have some really good headphones that are leak proof, or that you be in another room than your rig)

move the mic along the face of the speaker, fractions of an inch at the time, until you find the "sweet spot"....

there will be one, only one, for your rig......

also, try throwing a blanket over the whole setup, to isolate further......

Maybe try to cut the reverb from the boss (or the twin) for the recording

Add it later through an outboard unit, the boss, your recorder (if it has effects) or even the amp again [who knows?]

Peace
