ok. My buddy owns this korg d12, and i am fairly familiar with it's capabilities. I am also very computer literate. Somebody told him that he could hook his korg d12 to the computer they sold him with a midi cable and when he hits record on the d12 it will automatically start the recording in nuenedo also... All he has in the computer is a ess 16 bit sound card and they told him that the seperate tracks would be seperated in nuendo through the midi cable .. I told him that it sounded like bullshit I mean if all ya need is a korgd12 and a midi cable why are all these soundcard out there lika a delta 44, a echo mia, or a q 10?? I have used a midi cable for my line 6 to my computer and could control all the settings , so I am thinking that you can use the midi cable for controlling some of the settings in the d12, but midi does'nt send seperate audio tracks does it??? Please help me clarify this with him??
thanks

Midi is just control data, it wont send audio tracks. So when you connect a d12 and a computer with just a midi cable, you are actually sending signals to trigger the general midi inbuilt in your computer soundcard. That is why it sounds like crap. You are not actually getting the d12's sound. You have to connect the audio output of your d12 to some soundcard that is capable of recording it in a good quality. Here is where you need one of those delta or echo...etc. got it? Connecting a midi cable isn't enough, you have to connect the sudio cable too.
d12 output (or) guitar (or) mic (or) any other instrument > mixer > sound card
This is a typical simple setup.

I ma so sorry about my previous post, I kind of thought d12 is one of those Korg's synth Keyboards. I am sorry about that, if it is a workstation you don't even need a computer. Sorry about that.

I agree. I am trying to help him out, somebody already fed him a line of bull so he would trade a trace elliot bass amp and 2 cabs for a 1100 mgz computer with a ess sound card which is not capable of doing seperate tracks. I am going to get him to get a recording sound card so he can mixdown on the computer with nuendo. The korg d12 records at 24 bit 44,100 only and 16 bit and his only has a 2.1 gig harddrive. So , I am goning to get him to do all his recording with the Korg d12 then mixdown to the computer then erase the korg and keep repeating the process. i just wanted to make sure that I have not missed something with all this . to make it short his buddy screwed him out of a 1500.00 bass amp for a 400.00 computer + a little software.:( Thanks

you are right, computer prices drops every day rapidly but not all musical gear so better ask him to sell those gears in ebay and make some money. Then he can decide what computer and what soundcard you can buy. To me 1.1Ghz computer isn't worth the trade, unless it is fully fully loaded for recording.
