Okay heres the deal right now Im using a Shure AXS1, which is just a borrowed mic, and runnign it straight to my SB live Soundcard......So right now I have to select the +20DB option under my sound control menu on windows and when I do that then of course the static comes up with it too........When I went into Guitar Center the guy told me that if I got a Dynanamic mic then i wouldnt need a pre amp so I was wandering is this true or would I be better off gettin a pre amp so I can get a good CLEAN signal without the static getting picked up..........Also Im looking at upgrading to soem form of an M AUDIO soundcard and the AUDIO BUDDY PRE AMP and picking up an SM 58 so Im wandering if this will help me as far as cleaning up my vocal recording where I dont have to do massive noise reduction on every vocal take...........thanks............by the way Im looking at spending about 150 - 200 on a soundcard

Yes yes yes yes yes and yes.

Soundblaster mic pre is not made for what you're doing. Audio buddy is fine to start with. SM58 is great to start with. m-Audio soundcards offer very good value. In the $150-200 range you're looking at the Audiophile 2496, but I recommend saving up another few bucks for a Delta44 ($230).

so does a dynamic mic need a pre amp

does a dynamic mic like a shure sm 58 NEED a pre amp and also if it doesnt is it still better to run it thru a pre amp to get a cleaner signal?............... thanks for the reply

Yes it needs a preamp. The "mic" port on your soundblaster has a built-in preamp. However, it's designed to power those little electret computer mics, and is overall fairly poor quality.

You will typically use an external preamp and run it into the line in port.

Budget soundcard that doesn't suck: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Get a decent preamp.
Use the line input on the soundcard.
Soundblaster cards suck for proper audio recording.
They're fine for gamers or listening to music but forget about them for recording.

And chances are, that static, If you arent hearing that in the room, is being produced by that preamp built in on the card. THe mic isnt picking it up.
