C-3000 (the original) It's a nice sleeper condenser with some attitude. :D

Now Lee and Gemsbok, with all respect I think you might be mixing some concepts up with regard to lows needing time or space to develop. There are resonances (aside from the cab's) going on out side of the direct field. With that in mind, right up near the grill gets a more direct sound, and when you back off you begin to include some of the room's peaks and decay fun.
Yes? ;)

421 everytime I can. I lean the amp back and stick the mic about two feet away. I NEVER have room issues and my bass sound recorded in my old tiny bedroom sounds just like my bass sound from my basement...or loft room.

I like the original (black one) C3000 as well, but not for bass cab. I like it on upright. As for bass guitar, I like using a Radial J48 or JDI for DI and a D112 on the cab. Then, you can mix and match sounds to fit the song you are recording. There is no "right" way to record a bass. I like to record several sources if I have the available tracks, and then pick which ones work later on.

Cheers,
Zach
