Hello. I have a question. I play death/black metal and would like a budget mic that is good for getting a distorted guitar sound. I already own a 57. I'd like another one that'll work well with the 57. Any recommenations? My set up is schecter guitar, behringer 210 vtone amp,57, firebox, cubase le. Thanks.

isn't that like 300 bucks though? Unless i'm thinking of a different mic. Im looking for a cheaper one (150 and under). Sorry should have specified "budget". Thanks.

Sennheiser E609s would be a popular choice

Perhaps a condenser mic a couple of feet back, blended with the 57.

I hear that mic isn't good for a distorted tone but best used for a clean setting. Have you had any experienced recording a distorted gutiar tone with it?

maybe i'll go the condenser route. Like a SP b1. I've been looking into getting one of those. I could use an all purpose condenser. Yeah I think i'll try that. Have any of you heard of the 57 copies? the GLS57? It's 30 bucks and they claim it sounds the same as a 57. I mean even if it;s just a 5 percent difference i'd buy it.

Check out some of the low cost condensers by Marshalls MXL The V67 is good on amps, and also the Marshall MXLV93M (MXL2003) i have both and they are fairly good on amps. Never tried Studio projects mainly cos cant find one in any music shop round here, though i have heard some really promising stuff about them. I think both of these MXL's are under $100 dollars, I live in belfast, northern ireland and its pretty hard to pick up any decent condensers here

Yeah I think i'll go with the b1. I'd like to focus more now on dynamic mics.

An e609s sounds great blended with a 57....I don't care much for it on it's own though.

Any combination of a 57, 609, and SPB1 have worked well for me. For metal, I'd try the 57-609 combo first. You should be able to get a great sound out of the 57 by itself, so maybe work on placement technique before you whip out the credit card.

i think you will enjoy it a lot better on your amp than a 57 for your type of music.

When I'm recording distorted guitar, I tape two 57's together with the top one staggered back to the end of the bottom ones capsule. Kinda like this:
57575757
___57575757

This gets rid of the bump @ 5k in the 57's frequency response, and makes it relatively flat.

I know the b1 is a condenser. I said now that I know that im going to be buying ath for a condenser mic i'd like to focus on just dynamic mics. Thanks for all the replies so far.

how about that GLS57. I didn't wanna get another 57 but this one is so cheap and i'm sure it doesn't sound exactly like the original. But I mean for 30 bucks I think I should try it. I've heard good things about it. Or I can be irresponsible this week and just buy either the b1 or the Sennheiser E609s. The b1 will be good for vocals and just an all purpose mic plus i've heard nothing but great things about it or I can get the 609 which is just made for a guitar cab but will probably sound a little better for that use than if I were to use a b1 for that. I'm not sure. I have been looking to get a condenser. I don't have one right now. But then again the 609 may be better for what I need at the moment, which is just miking a guitar cab.

300 bucks is a budget mic. :D

The term that describes $150 and under mics is "cheap." That would be the word. "I'm looking for a CHEAP mic."

Glad we got that all straightened out. So ... $150 or less ... good for distorted guitar. Hmmm. The only one I can really think of is the SM-57, but you've already got one of those.

Still thinking ... alright I got one for ya. If you want something REALLY REALLY good on distorted guitar amp for less than $150, then I would recommend getting on ebay and start bidding on a used Electrovoice RE-15 or 16. Or even an 635A (which would be a great compliment to the 57). The fact that it's also really really good on just about everything else ... is merely a bonus.

Frankly, it sounds like you need to improve the rest of your chain, not another mic. The amp in particular is the weakest part of the chain it seems. Getting another mic isn't going to make your amp sound any better, especially for metal. The best metal tones I've heard have been a nice amp into a 57 into a nice preamp, no extra nonsense.

you can find that es57 somewhere on www.speakerrepair.com
ive heard some good things about it, but havent used it. ive been thinking of getting a couple for recording live demos.
