Mic for recording distorted guitar

The e609 is awesome in conjunction with another good mic. You have an sm57, so I'd say get an LDC too! LDC's can really help pick up what a dynamic mic misses...when placed properly!

Frankly, it sounds like you need to improve the rest of your chain, not another mic. The amp in particular is the weakest part of the chain it seems. Getting another mic isn't going to make your amp sound any better, especially for metal. The best metal tones I've heard have been a nice amp into a 57 into a nice preamp, no extra nonsense.

I'll second this post.

Also, as Chess said as well, a 57 is the best cheap mic you can get for distorted guitars. Wanna a killer guitar tone - get a better amp, slap a 57 and a R-121 in front of it, put 'em thru a good pre/converter setup, slap an 1176 on it in the mix, and Viola! Badass guitar! (as long as the guitarist can actually play!)

:D

yes yes that would be great to get a really nice amp and mic pre. But I don't have the money. I do have the money to buy another mic which I think will help my sound. I've been using two mics right now(the second is a shitty one) and I still prefer it to just the 57.

hmm maybe I could afford it. With a credit card anyways haha. How do those platinum member cards work? Would I be approved even though I currently am paying off a small loan(4000 dollars,200 bucks a month for like two years)? Right now im living with my parents and don't really have many bills. If I were to say spend 2000 dollars, how slow could I pay it back?

you went from buying a cheap dynamic mic to asking for financial advice all in the same thread. :D you got the gear lust bug.

I'm not bashing anything but before you try to spend tons on gear to record your amp, you really have to take a look at the amp you are trying to record. A $200 behringer might not be the best source to try to capture with a lot of $ spent at the other end. Try recording your amp direct (lines out of the back end), you might find it a nice , usable sound for your recording

no I mean if I spend a lot of money with ath platinum card i'd buy a better amp!, Unless you are talking about the mics, but that's not spending a lot of money. I did try recording it direct. It sounds like shit. Sounds much betetr miked. Just cause I have a cheap amp doesn't mean I should not bother trying to get a good sound out of it.

The bottom line is if the amp sounds good to you in your room then that sound can be captured. Personally, I don't really like a 57 on a guitar cab but I don't play metal guitar. The 57 sure as hell does'nt capture a faithful reproduction of what you hear in your room playing thru the amp.

Everyone is giving you good advice. What I would add is a very little money spent right now will give you a good Mic to do alot of the work load.

Studio Projects VTB-1 this is your Mic preamp. This has adjustments for gain and adjustment for tube. Why tube you may ask when you are talking about distortion. Why theres distortion that will simply overloud your whole sound. Then theres Harmony distortion. This will blend your distorted for better tones. You'll be able to adjust the Mic amp to do a ton of different sounds. So you can Mic almost anything and adjust the Mic amp to what you need.

A good Mic to use for this is a good Mic to good with you Mic amp.
Electro Voice VND367S
So with this Mic and the Mic amp plus the Mic's you already have. Should put you into the professional sound for a very small but wisely used investment.
