Measurement mics

Are measurement mics linear (in freq response), or are they supposed to be? If not, how are they different form any other mic?

Measurement mics are very linear and they're omni. They can be designed for flat response on axis, and a slight high frequency rolloff off axis.

They can also be designed with a rising high frequency response on axis, but flat response off axis. This second type is called a "diffuse field measurement mic".
