I am new to home recording so I don't know what I'm talking about but maybe some of yawl can help me. I am setting up a home studio for hard disk recording. I will prbably be using two C1's and either a Mackie 1402 or somthing like a PreSonus MP20. Now to the question: my son in Atlanta is into bluegrass and intends to use MD recording. Do the mics us in MD not require preamps? If I had my mics and the Mackie could I run it to a MD? Are there MD's that are higher fidelity than others with or without preamplification? Any help would be appreciated.

Yo Bob: Did you know that Bob spelled backwards is BOB?

That's called a palindrome.

Like, radar spelled backwards is, of course, RADAR. So much for The world of English.

I don't quite understand your question. If you use an MD-8 recorder by Yam, it does have mic preamps built in. Oh, like man, they are not the best, but they do a nice job. I use an ART mic pre and boost the signal by 20 dbs. Great vocals if you know how to control the input/output/reverb/etc. Lots of work involved in mixing down to any format.

So, if you make your question clearer, I might be able to answer you in a succinct manner.

Able was I ere I saw Elba

You did indeed give me much of what i was asking. Not being familiar with MD, it was not clear to me whether or not there was any preamplification. It could have been that one simply used a different type of mic. As you replied, there is built in pre amplification. I also gather from your reply, that I could very likely use my mics and pres with such units.

Again, are there accepted units with better fidelity than others?

Thanks for your attention. BH

There's lots of MD recorders on the market, but only a few multitracks. I think the Yamaha MD4S 4-track has the most recent ATRAC version. I've only used my MD8, so I don't have any experience with other units. The link below may offer some help on other MD multitracks. I've done some acoustic recording with the MD8 and got pretty good results. I don't think there's a whole lot of difference between units.

BTW I saw a reconditioned MD8 at my local GC (Falls Church, VA) for $499.00 this past weekend.
