I Am Touched
...and not just in the head, either.
This kinda' turned into one of those threads that people bitch about, but sometimes "constructive criticism" can come in the form of "leave it the hell alone," which is what I'm gonna' try to do.
Gang - the comments are VERY much appreciated by us. For Mark, mainly b/c this is probably more "poppish" than he's used to, and for me, b/c it's a little less folky than I'm comfortable with, lol. I'm short on time, but I'm not short on appreciation...lemme' take a crack at this.
flat-9 - I'm saving yours for the press release, lmao. That was freaking beautiful. You're a monster musician, so it means a lot. Thanks.
Zikes - THANKS!!! I'm sure it'll never be "done;" like most of us around here, we never finish songs...just temporarily abandon them until some better time comes around, which never happens, lol.
lynx - much appreciate the listen and the opinions. Needs more acoustic guitar, lol.
Kramer - I don't really know what to say to you other than "thanks," - I mean, you give great direction when you think it's needed, and you give support regardless. That's why I hunt you down and ask you to listen to stuff, lol. Thanks.
David a.k.a. Ears Of Freshness - You're a guy I consider to be the real deal when it comes to Rock vocals, so thanks.
Mike a.k.a. "MonkeyBoy Guernica" - Dude, I'm not gonna' even try to be cool about your post. I think I read it about five times last night and got a total kick out of it - then I read it to my wife (who hadn't heard this tune, btw). Because of your post, she actually ASKED to hear the song, lmao. That's a new one. (She's maybe the planet's biggest fan of MonkeyFeet). Like just about everybody else here, I have HUGE respect for your talent, and the time you take (on dialup still?) is always above and beyond the call. THANKS.
As for your verb/ delay question, I can only speak for the singer/outro kindergarten riff player. I do almost all my delay/echo stuff manually by making copies of parts I want to delay and then EQ'ing the copies differently. I used 2 verbs...one is this ridiculous reverb in the WAVES package (TrueVerb) called "Millenium," and it has (no shit) a 14 second decay. I only used that on the "no" screams and before one of the dropouts, I think. On most of the lead vocal, there's no reverb at all...b/c I used a hefty concert hall verb on the backups, so it kinda' gives the "feel" of reverb to the lead vocal w/o all the mushiness of overlapping verbs. A lot...(I mean, A LOT) of the lead vocal is doubled, so the only place I had to use verb was where there was a single lead vocal with no backups...if you listen, there aren't many spots like that, lol. It's called "covering up," lol...and I'm always trying to cover stuff up. As for the production on here, it was totally a 2-way process... We just kept sending mixes to each other with ideas on what the other could do here or there until he FINALLY TURNED THE BASS UP, lol. - I'm rambling...mostly b/c I really appreciated your posts.
groovejunkie - You've got a new fan...thanks man.
Gidge - lmao - remind me never to marry you and have an argument...I mean, I KNOW you're the guy bringing up shit from the mid 80's whenever you scrap with the wife, lol. I appreciate the sentiment, but I still think the only reason you have that opinion is b/c you "know" me, and you know this isn't how I sing. Regardless, you remain one of the coolest people I've never met. Thanks.
B.SABBATH - What an ego you have on you. I mean, to think that I'd use A.T.
solely to annoy you. After all, there's sluice to think about too, lmao. But seriously, since you do heavier stuff and were able to control your laughter, I appreciate your post a lot...and yeah, Mark's on dialup, so none of the mp3 transfers were higher than 192...hopefully, the finished product will be a little cleaner.
jagular - thanks for the careful review. You're totally right, btw - and there's actually a quasi-explanation (i.e., excuse) for the way it ended up. The original tune is almost 8 minutes long. I wrote lyrics to fill up 8 minutes, and it's much more of a story, and it ends in a very dark way (too dark for average consumption) like in a confrontation at the victim's funeral following a suicide complete with explanatory suicide note. (ewwww). Anyway, I've told mark as soon as I can, he's getting the full dance version; I'm not gonna' post it, but I'll definitely link you to it so you can have some closure, lol. Seriously, your post reminds me of one of Crawdad's first posts when I got here, and I've always appreciated the songwriting insight.
Hope I didn't miss anybody. Again, it means a ton to me that you guys took the time...As much fun as this has been, I gotta' retreat again for awhile. Mark, it's all yours.
