Damn! I am sorry I missed out on this one.I have been away from the board way too long, but I had two things keeping me away 1.) overtime at work and 2.) more overtime at work.
Anyway,I listened to all three on 3 different sources. My alesis point 7 studio monitors,a set of altec-lansing "surround" computers with a little sub-woofer and a set of sony 7506 cans.
I couldn't tell the difference between 1 and 2 on the pc speaks, but could hear the difference on the monitors and cans. 2 didn't really sound all that bad, just sounded dirtier to me.
The original sounds the best on the monitors if I give it just a little volume bump. 1 sounded best in the cans.
As far as looking to a mastering engineer to perform "miracles" with your mixes, don't. Mixes that good don't need a "miracle" they just need a little light buffing. A really good mastering engineer knows that less can be more, and IMHO that would be the guy you want.
Peace
