Im attempting to master a song. I made track 7/8 available. The vmastr reads ive got data already on with a hollow box. It should read - line or . Dot to indicate available space
Mastering a song. Indicator reads data exists ie hollow square

You'll have to explain a bit more - we have no context whatsoever - what software, what exactly are you doing and what kind of hollow box are we talking about? What is happening, I'm lost?

I think we are on a hardware system, Tascam or the like. And the track indicator box on the built in tiny monitor which, according the poster shoukld show a dot or a line to indicate empty space.
I'm just guessing but that seems the obvious answer (very obvious ) from what he writes.

I'm guessing it's a Boss BR800 and we're in Mastering mode. Page 115 of the manual hints at the OP's description but is lacking in further details.

That was my guess too. And 7/8 (virtual 1) usually contains the rhythm track from the built-in drums.
