they dont get softer, its just that the bass takes up most of the avaliable space in the frequency spectrum, try panning each bass part left and right, as well as turning the volume down on them.

Having a huge ducking issue. I think that's what it's called.

The Turn by Jamesbuckelew on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

from like 1:13 to 1:27 and again later on(end and beginning double bass parts), when the double bass comes in the rest of the instruments get softer. wtf mate.

:[ help please

Oh no, it's you again.....lol! Just kidding. I am assuming you are sidechaining a compressor with kick drum on a group with guitars and or bass or something there. It seems you just have the threshold way too high and the release too slow so that the compressed group is not recovering quickly enough. Fix that would ya! :D

Sounding quite good otherwise dood. :)

LOL. I thought it was going to have a double bass part in it. Shoulda known better.

Anyway, it sounds like you have a mix buss comp going, and when the kick hits the comp, its causing it to compress - crazy, I know - but yeah, you need to adjust the level of the kick, or the level of the comp.

i realized i have a compressor on the master track, thats what triggering it. But it sounded fine on the new one. humm
How do i up the volume of the whole song with out having it pump cause i hate it. :[

The one I see up there has been up for 9 hours. It pumps on Every single kick, and stays engaged through the double-kick sections. Sounds really bad IMHO. Also, if that wav form is accurate, you have it set kinda funny. Not sure how you're getting that weirdness.

If that's the newest mix, I'd start by adjusting that comp so that you are only getting a few db's of GR if it's gonna be on the mix buss. Second, as stated above, get a limiter and strap it on after the comp.

Good luck.

:D

on a scale of 1 to 10 [1 being a mic plugged into the computer mic slot and editing with audacity not having any idea what you're doing and 10 being professional like bob rock and his assistants]

where does my mix fall right now and what do i need to do to improve this?

I'd say you're at 4-5, but without vocals, it's hard to say. I think once vox is added, the drums will be all but gone.

I'll give you my opinions on the mix - guitars are too up front as compared to the drums. Guitars are in your face, but the drums sound like they are down the hall. Guitar tone could use some work - has a very solid state type sound to it. Drum timing REALLY needs to be fixed - the mix is irrelevant if the performance is bad. I can't tell if there is a bass in there or not, so if it is, it needs to come up and get some more definition. I know bass is often downplayed in this type of music, but it still needs to be there.

Anyway, I hope that helps. This mix is much better than the previous, that is for sure.

Thanks. Id really like this song to end up as a 7 or 8 once i'm done.

to start heres what happened.

guitars i'm working on i've eq'd them a little recorded them direct in. i haven't put any reverb on them and turned them down to set in the mix was gonna wait for vocals.

drums - well the drummer isn't very good and i've gone through and messed with quantizing the audio and it's taking forever and then they said they wanted to redo them because they changed a part..ugh....so i stopped bothering with them.

the bass track they sent, sucks balls. so i turned it down really low. i will record bass when we sit back down.

thank you for the criticism i like having people tear down my mixes to an extent.

but once it's all done. i'm hoping to come out with something better than their last album because they want to go back to the guy and spend money on him, and i wouldn't mind showing them i can creat something jsut as good

this is from their last album
‪A Day's Past - Abaddon (New Song 2010) HQ‬‏ - YouTube

so if you think i can top that then let me know cause i feel that i can.

Checked out that tune on Myspace - youtube just kills audio most of the time. That mix is much better than your current one, but it's got issues as well. The best thing about it is the performance. The timing is WAY better than what you're working with. Can you beat it? Hard to say. It's not the greatest recording, but it's not terrible either. I'd get the performance right first though - or at least to an editable state.

Good luck with the recording and mixing! :D

Haha ok. So saying i can get the performance down from the band.

what does he do that i'm missing? and what does he do that's got problems?

His mix is much better balanced. Guitar tone is a lot better, but could still be improved. You can hear the bass. I think he's got the vox set back too far, and the cymbals are almost non-existent. He may have just programmed the drums though. That may explain the radical difference in timing?

I think that at the end of the day, you are either going to do better, or you won't. Heck, you may do better, but the band will still like what the other guy did better. Just do what you think is best, and learn as much as you can from it. :)
