major pan problem: right a lot, left a little

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice: for some reason, Cool Edit is recording signal mostly to the right channel of the stereo waveform, however, it is recording a small amount of signal to the left channel.

I’ve checked the “pan” settings on Cool Edit, the Windows settings and on the Sansui Mixer. All are set dead in the middle – not leaning one bit toward left or right.

I guess what I need to do is try a different XLR cable - to see if that is the problem. I kind of doubt that it is. I guess I should also try removing the Sansui mixer from the equation by going directly from microphone into the back of my computer via two adapters (XLR to ¼”, and ¼” to 1/8”) to see if the Sansui mixer is the problem.

Aside from the above possible solutions, can anyone please, please suggest some other troubleshooting strategies that might help resolve this problem? All a dude wants to do is RECORD.

Check Pan-settings on your mixer. (Both on your mic-input channel and main output).
There is another possible fault:
I guess your mixer has one volume fader for Right and one for Left output
and you are using output which is affected by those faders.
Those two should be always adjusted to the same level.
You should actually use LINE OUT to connect it to your sound card.
You can't affect your recording signal by panning in CEP.
Anyway, you should record your vocal in mono.
There is a cure for those already recorded vocal files:
Bounce them to mono and you'll get both channels bounced to one mono file.
When recording keyboards (or guitar via stereo processor) you could achieve that kind of file.
Some patches are made that way and they give most power to one output.
