Looking for a 2 channel preamp that is around $500 to $600 at best quality for that budget. I've had my eyes on the Tru P solo and the Auture by black lion audio.. Are these two worth the money? Are there any higher scale pre's for around the same price??

Also I'm thinking about picking up a DI box. Would that pair up nicely with a good 2 channel mic pre??

If you want two channels, then you might consider FMR's RNP.

I have a personal preference for the P-Solo, but that's $500-ish per channel while the RNP is a dual-channel unit (and a quite freaking good one at that).

The line6 UX2 is the best in that class...if you want versitility and quality...it is usable as an interface and an A/D converter as well...you might cruise this one first before laying out $500 for something that only does one trick.

i would consider the dbx 386... 2 ch tubes (real tubes not starved plate) has Hi-z (di) on front panel ... multiple outputs used simultaeneously... 96k 24bit convertors.... not very popular model making it one of the most overlooked IMO... i even use it in my live keyboard rig... i can run my stage monitor... send to FOH... and record me at the same time...

The Dbx 386 is a starved plate design...just like the ART preamps.

I had an FMR RNP and got rid of it in favour of a Black Lion Auteur. To my ears the Auteur has a little more color, Punch in the lows, good mids and nice warm highs.
It's all very subjective though and the RNP had more gain so it really depends what you are after.

Radial makes good DIs IMO and they certainly "work" with a pre if you want to do that. I'm using one to take my guitar into a pre for some color before it goes to an amp sim. Works for me, I think it sounds a little nicer than Guitar > AI > Amp Sim.

I'm not at all familiar with the Black Lion but I'm not surprised that you dumped the RNP.

Rather than overstating the bulge or prowess of his budget, the OP just might want to consider purchasing a clean and unobtrusive preamp such as the DMP-3.

Just a thought.
