Longevity of converters

Will good converters always be good converters? Or will today's RME be surpassed by a 100$ interface five years from now? The reason I ask, is I need a new interface, but was thinking on buying some nice Apogee converters instead, and then the cheapest interface with digital ins that I can find and maybe upgrade the interface when I've got the cash. Is this a good plan for the long term or will the Apogee end up being worthless down the road?

If your running a mac why not just get a ensemble and be done with it.
Heck even if you don't run a mac you can use it in stand alone mode.
Apogee seems to be eager to switch over to the new thunderbolt interface
so everything could change when that is out.
