I am using a yamaha mt-400 multitracker that accepts only 1/4" jacks. I am planning to upgrade to condenser studio mic. Would I need a line transformer? Would I also need a phantom power supply?

I am recording choral group. Would condenser or dynamic be better for this purpose. Would one good quality studio condenser mic for capturing main sound and two cheaper dynamics for stereo effect give me an acceptable quality? Would like to hear your ideas.

Answer to Question # 1: You will need a phantom power supply for a condenser, unless it has an internal battery. you would also need a line match transformer. OR you could get an in-expensive preamp, like a DMP3 or a VTB1. A preamp will probably give you alot better performance.

Answer to Question #2: Condensers will be better for recording a choral group. I think your best results would come from 2 condensers in stereo, or a dedicated stereo mic.

Cave dweller pretty much nailed it. Your recorder is looking for high impedence signals. The best way to give it that is a preamp. I support DMP-3 as a workable option. Then a pair of condensers should work fine. I'd probably consider a pair of MXL 603, Studio Projects B-1 or C-4 (better), or CAD M179. Any of those should do a pretty good job.-Richie
