Now that you have collected all the hot drum sounds you can, it's time to put them to use. You can have all the hot drum sound in the world, but you have to know hot to use them.
Layer your sounds!
1. Layer a high (crisp) less bassy kick with a nice tight low kick. This will give you a loud but also body to your kick. You can also layer a hat with it to simulate a Dr. Dre kick.
2. Next, add a low 808 to your kick. You may have to EQ the bass down just a little to fit with you layered kick. If you can't put the layered sound on one key or pad, just copy the kick sequence to you other kick sample tracks to trigger them.
3. Claps: Layer 3 claps. One strong 808 clap, and 2 different crunchy claps. Pan the crunchy claps left and right. This will give you a strong big clap.
4 Add a small gated re-verb to you 808 clap. Not to much, just a little. This will give your clap more body with out a lot of big re-verb.
Note:
*Make your own samples! If you are using Reason, make a session called "Claps 1". Layer multiple claps together. Mix them and add gated re-verb. Now just export your clap and you have a custom clap all mixed and ready to go. This also saves space and CPU power. Dr. Dre is known for this...
