Latency in Colossus

I'm using EastWest's Colossus MIDI software with my USB/MIDI keyboard and I am experiencing a delay that interferes with me trying to play on-time with a beat. I have set the buffer in Colossus's settings as low as it will go (7ms i think). Is the keyboards USB connection going to make any difference than if it were connected with a MIDI cable instead. And I am also only using the onboard sound at the moment on my ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. Any advice in getting me as close to 'real time' as possible will be much appreciated.

thanks

Try ASIO4all --- LINK --- first.

If that doesn't work you'll need a new soundcard.

If you're running Collosus on a desktop with an open PCI slot, this would be a good choice.

I do use Line 6's toneport UX2 to record guitar and vocals, and It is also used as my primary sound device (just not at the moment cause its getting fixed). heres a link to it:

would that be comparable to the Audiophile card mentioned above, as far as helping with my latency?

Before it was 'getting fixed', were you having this latency problem?

Or is that what's getting fixed?

.

actually, I first set up Colossus and the MIDI keyboard while the Toneport was getting fixed, so it has been running off my onboard sound at the moment. So, I wonder if the Toneport will serve as a good enough soundcard to help my latency.

and btw, what is this ASIO4all all about?

It's an ASIO driver for everybody, just as the file name suggests.

It's not a terrorist site that I recommend to people just to have them give their computers a virus. ASIO is an industry-standard, low latency driver that's become pretty much universal for all audio applications. Your USB keyboard may or may not have come with a copy of ASIO4all.

If not, download it and install it according to the instructions and it should solve your latency problems.

Also, when you get your Toneport back and install it, it BECOMES your soundcard and your onboard one should be disabled in the control panel if the Toneport installation CD doesn't take care of that already.

i played around with the ASIO4all and it seems that the lower the latency gets the crappier the sound gets, I got it down to 2ms but it sounded horribly distorted.

thats because the lower the latency settings, the more processing the computer needs to do and what you are hearing is the glitching of too much info being processed. You need to find the lowest setting that does not cause problems with the audio
