through what many would consider "amatuer" monitors: M-Audio BX8's.
I don't want to disparage your gear but I think you can do better than the BX8s for not much money. I recently compared them to KRK Rokit 8s and the ubiquitous Mackies and I didn't think they compared very well. The BX8 tweeters mashed all the high frequencies into a nasty sizzle and the mids were seriously scooped. I don't think you'd be able to hear subtle differences on those speakers. They've got sweeter tweeters on the KRKs :)

Not offended at all... I'm pretty familiar with the BX8's and their limitations - precisely why I gave the disclaimer. I have other sets; these just happened to be the ones set up at the time I listened to the comparison.

Nope, it just disappears into the noise floor...

Seriously, it doesn't lose resolution in 32 bit float until the mixdown is rendered (or it hits the converters). The resolution would be the same either way once the mix was digitized for CD.

When your noise floor is in the 128dB range, that works out just fine.

What sort of signal chain could you have that has a noise floor that low?

the only wow factor i need is the sound...sorry to respond to an older thread...

i just mixed my second or third project from a computer (cubase- though i've used nuendo as well) out of an HD24 through my board (sound workshop 34). the stuff sounded so thin in the computer...with not much processing at all.

personally, i'm amazed folks can get good sounds in the computer without going out of it and mixing analog. honestly, i think it's as difficult for me to do as it was for me to "learn digital" coming from analog. hats off to those who can do it. i have yet to hear a good sounding record all digital in person...i.e.- i know the studio and i know the thing wasn't mastered yet.

i'll keep working at it but i really was amazed at how bad it sounded in comparison - or should i say i was relieved that it sounded decent coming out of the computer... i've got a long way to go before that board goes.

Mike
