I want to setup my laptop to record multitrack. I generally play guitar, but also have a midi keyboad. I will also neet to record voice.

The laptop is relatively new 2.0 ghz with 1 mb ram with an onboard soundcard (sigmatel) which I don't think is sufficient. It also has USB2 plus the 1394 firewire(?).

Can anyone tell me what I would need in terms of hardware?

Thanks

Firewire is the way to go.

Have a look at the presonus or m-audio units with the built in preamps

Yep, Firewire will give you the speed you need. U will also need an external hard drive, preferrably firewire or USB 2 at a minimum. The internal drive is probably a 5400 RPM drive and may not be able to handle the recording software and the data transfer needed to record more than basic stuff. I've tried Sonar and Samplitude, both really struggle to record more than one track with the internal drive. If your internal soundcard doesn't use WDM drivers at a minimum, the midi stuff will be an issue due to latency. ASIO will be the best drivers, followedby WDM. MME will be unacceptable.

I don't think you're going to be able to do much of anything with 1 MB of RAM.

I hope that was a typo.

I would go Firewire, although, the Fast Track Pro by M-Audio looks pretty tempting.

Gotta be a typo! Thats about what the old 286/386 dinosaur machines had many centuries ago-LOL!
