My brother has one of these for his kids and wants to get a rig to do recording for voice and this "Kurzweil" keyboard. I assume there is a line out on the Kurzweil which can be plugged into a preamp and then into a studio in a box (fostex, Korg, etc.)

But can he not also go direct into his soundcard to make (wav?) files to then covner to mp3 and send to his buddies, and is this easily accomplised? He will want to overlay voice tracks. My thinking is that the cheapest route is just to get a decent sound card and plug, alternately, his microphone and the keyboard into that sound card. Sound reasonable? Does CoolEdit work in this scenario? As a guitar player, I have this assumption that everything is made for guitars only! I am posting this same message on the keyboard forum.

Thanks.

You dont even need a preamp to get the Keyboard lineout into the computer. Just connect the keyboard lineout to the soundcard line in and record it in a software. That is probably the cheapest way to do it, all you need is a stereo cable/cables.
For better quality you can get a better soundcard, like a audiophile 2496. Since you are more concerned about mp3s, you may very well use the soundcard you have.

soundcard

If you're just gonna connect the keyboard to the back of your exisiting soundcard (which i'm assuming is stock), you'll need to get a y-adapter for the rca cables to go into the line in. (stock soundcards only have 1/8 in. inputs).
What I recomend you do (which will cost a lil more money) is get the soundblaster extigi and use the midi in/out that it has. The extigi plugs straight into you usb in your computer and has a MUCH better sound. It does both digital and analog recording and comes w/ a remote. You can get them on e-bay for about $80. Go here for more info on the extigi http://www.soundblaster.com/products/extigy/
This'll only work though if the keyboard has midi in/out capabilities. It's worth a shot tho.
