I mean, is it a big deal if I don't know how to play? I just thought that you could make tighter beats and it had more options. It was either that or an MPC 2000

I don't think it is a big deal, but buying a Motif for making beats is like buying a Ferrari for a work car :D

You are right to consider it because the MPC 2000 will run you $1400 online, but frankly you would have as much success with the Casio WK 1800($499). My nephew has one and he takes money from his friends in beat creating contests. It's not the kinda ketboard you want if your trying to sell CD's, but for idea generation it does pretty damn good.

I say cop the triton or the motif whichever u prefer. if u dont know where middle C is... so what , find out and mark it with tape, then take some basic keyboard lessons or something if its that much of an issue.

if u buy any thing later get the mpc later. buying an mpc wont give u sounds; u will still have to get sounds to put into it. I like the mpc for chopping and triggering audio phrases (it has a certain feel that i like) and occassional sequencing.

I simply dont believe in buying anything that i know for a fact i will replace. If u do go with something cheaper do it for a better reason than not knowing how to play.

BTW, if not going the big board route i'd get the motif rack ($999)or the XV5050($799 which i own and love)
