Out on another forum I have been reading a lot of buzz about the KEL HM-1 mics. I am presently using a pair of SP B-1's for room mics and drum overheads; has anyone here compared the two?

Yeah, I know, a pair of $3000 Neumanns will blow both of them away, but I really don't care about that; I just want to know how these two ~$100 mics compare.

i haven't used one of the KEL mics, but I do have a B1 (and like it fine on some sources).

From what I've read from the KEL ads in TapeOp, website, etc., I would expect this mic to be of a similar vein to the SP B1. in other words, a very neutral mic--not flashy and not shitty.

however, the best test would be in getting hold of one and checking it out.

I'm hoping that someone who has heard them both will reply; there's no way I know of to get hold of one without buying it, and if it's virtually the same as a B-1, I don't want to do that.

i thought i'd read in the KEL ad in one of the TapeOps that they'd let you do a "trial"......but it's been a while, so don't quote me on that. ;)

still, it might be worth your while to call em up and see if they'll let you demo the mic or what their return policy is.

I have a set of them I got last December and have not used them in a long time.

If I get a chance I will set them up as drum O/H's this weekend.

I found a pretty good review of them a coupla weeks ago by googling Kel HM-1 review, or something similar... it was apdf file from some recording magazine... actyaally mayeb it was alink from the Kel website... I can't remember but you should be able to find it with a little sleuthing.
I think the main thing about them was that they ere kinda dark sounding. there is a nice acoustic guitar recording sample on their site.(there may have been a drum one too, but i didn't listen to that).

My mic test with 2 Kel HM1's as O/H and a mic inside of the kick

The O/H are set up as follows
KEL HM-1 32 inches above the center of the snare
KEL HM-1 32 inches from the center of snare over the right hand sholder of drummer
Superlux PRA-218b inside of kick drum with a 15 inch hole in the center of the front head

The O/H are panned hard left and hard right.
Kich up the center.
No EQ, compression, or FX's.

Let me know what you think.
I'm not sure if I like them panned hard left and right. But I left it that way for the mic test and I only used 3 mics so you could hear the KEL's
If you want I could post the same clip without the kick mic.

ok.......quote me. i've got the latest Recording in hand, and the ad for the KEL states that they'll let you do a 21-day, worry/risk free trial. if you wanna see how it stacks up against the B1, there's your "in".

I just received my pair today... did a quick recording tonight to see if all is well. I tried both on my parlor acoustic in the over-the-shoulder position. They made my parlor sound "bigger" with a nice natural woody tone while still revealing nice picking detail. Compare these to my new Peluso CEMC6s which accentuated the higher frequencies and made that little guitar sound kind of "thin". This prooves to me these will definitely be useful mics for certain applications.

Besides, being Canadian, when I heard of mics being made in Winnipeg, I had to have them!

Oh, and they are really, really nice looking mics... much smaller than I expected and have a cuteness factor about them.

I'm thinking these would be good for mic'ing acoustic guitar for recording a show. My SP-b1 seems to be kinda big and picks up a lot of ambient noise.. These only have .5" diaphram so maybe they would be a better for such an application. I like to mic the guitar as well as use the line inputs =]
