paranoia over-ruling common sense......

No, knowledge and experience trying to over-rule determined ignorance. You seem determined to be right about something you don't really understand, nor do you seem willing to accept the possibility that you could be wrong, or do any research to understand what you are talking about. That's a really dangerous combo when dealing with high voltage.

I've been doing tube amp work for fifteen years, including five in a professional capacity during which I built relationships with techs and designers at most of the big makers. I run my own service now, and have an average of three amps on my bench at any time. I have made every possible mistake except for a fatal one. Safety isn't just a word, folks.

There are old techs, and bold techs, but no old bold techs. :)

You dont know enough to analyze me. You dont have enough experience to analyze me. You dont have any idea what I am determined to be, what I understand, what I'm willing to accept, or what kind of research I've done. I'm not trying to "be right" and I understand a LOT more than you realize. Common sense and technical genius do not always get along very well, but common sense is just as useful.

Do you always feel the need to belittle anyone who doesn't agree with you 100%?? I apologize for evoking an adversarial stance from you, but it seems like if we were "arguing" about this in person over a beer you would have punched me by now.

Put....the.....gloves.......down! :D

Since I was 8 years old I've had enough sense to discharge and bleed caps before I start tinkering. I've opened up more amps than most of these guys will ever see in their whole lives, and I'm still here. I can keep on opening up amps for the rest of my life and I will not get shocked by a self-recharging cap. A little common sense usually goes a lot farther than a bunch of scare tactics.

And if this sounds like I'm trying to belittle you the same way you tried to belittle me..... Sorry! Not my intent.....

Pass the cherry pepsi and the soldering iron......

awww...c'mon guys, I think we've beat this to death now haven't we? Always discharge caps and if you're not sure...do it anyways. Those that don't know and fear for their lives and safety...just don't touch it. Doesn't that pretty much cover it?

I'll put the gloves down, but you started the belittling and scoffing, and if I bit back a little hard, sorry, but tough :). I should have been nicer to ggun, he was just misinformed. You, however, asked for it. And keep on asking for it.;)

I got cheesed because someone could get hurt, and was being misinformed, and I got mocked for sharing info that could prevent an accident. That'll rile me every time. Not trying to scare anyone, just inform and provide a healthy respect for filter caps based on what they are and how they work.

antispatula- discharge the caps, every time. It takes almost no time, and is common sense. They are nothing to be afraid of, just respected.

Were you not nice to me? Sorry I didn't pick up on that. Anyway, I maintain that spontaneous recharge in caps is a whole lot less likely in a cap which is installed in an amp than one which is not, however, I always use my wirewound resistor probe to ground on the high voltage nodes first thing when I open up an amp, no matter whether it was just powered up or has been sitting unplugged. 'Tis only prudent.
