Is this wrong? (ordering a U87 to try out)

I want to order a U87 from Musician's Friend to try out. I want to compare it to a couple of the mics that I have just to see how it measures up. Just for curiousity. I'd also like to record a mess of vocals with it and see how they turn out. Then, return it for a full refund.

So...I'm kinda thinking this is morally wrong. But really...what harm could it cause? They offer a 45 day money back guarantee and I can return it for any reason.

I guess I could keep it if it completely amazes me. But I'm thinking it probably won't.

I'm sure a rather large company is going to be hurt tons by you returning a mic. Wakka wakka wakka :rolleyes:
 
Of all places it's probably the better to do it to. If you went into GC it'd really suck for a guy to think he's getting a fat commision on a mic only to learn you were just renting it. While I do think this is morally wrong, it could be a good learning experience so I say go for it. Just remember it's really their mic so treat it with respect. Or gut it and put the guts in a cheap mxl body and send the u87 back with mxl guts. There's always that option.
 
i'd check with them to see if neumann is an excluded manufacturer. also i'd be a little wary of that provision that they can charge a 15% restocking fee.

Well, I wasn't thinking "screw Musician's Friend over" when I thought about this. But certainly wouldn't do it to other more respected places. (Mercenary, Vintage King, etc)

I have full intention of taking great care of it so it is returned in the same condition in which I got it. As for gutting it...I think I'll pass. My conscience couldn't live with that.

I talked to one of the live chat guys and he said that I could return the Neumann for any reason. And no where on the U87 page does it say that Neumann is except from their policy. As for the 15% thing, that appears to be only if the item has visible signs of use or some of the packaging is missing.
 
also, iirc there a few dealers who will let you do this openly (free trial as long as you put your credit card info down) including mercenary, warhead's front end audio (i believe), and high profile audio, among others

If ya wouldn't do it to them, you shouldn't do it. Rent one....
 
Most placed will not take returns on mics. GC is one of them. Mot sure about MF
 
Back in the good old days there wasnt always the option to return. The entire marketing industry is pretty much based on this return if you aint happy option now. They are banking on you being blown away by this mic and keeping it. It is a mic also, not a pair of knickers.
 
Someone else posted it, but make sure you can in fact return mics. You said you spoke with a sales person over chat, and they seemed to indicate directly that you could, but I know you can't in-store at Guitar Center - just don't want to see you get screwed by your own deception :D

...not that I am judging - I haven't always been so cavalier with the stores myself... once I wanted a relatively cheap acoustic to take on a vacation, so I bought a 300/400 dollar Ibanez acoustic, took it on the trip, and not needing it after I got home a week later, I returned it for full refund. There was nothing wrong with it upon return, but I did feel a little bad returning the thing. Apparently not enough to keep it, but still :P

Yes they will, you just have to call them out. They told me it was the law, I told them to show me this law and they refunded my money. There is no such law stating that mics cannot be returned due to health risks, if that were the case every radio station, live venue and studio would be shut down.

i say order it, gut it, and return it with an MXL inside ;) that's what I would do...they've screwed me over on so many occasions, it's time they get it.

But, then again...sucks for the guy that would be getting a U87 with MXL guts and think that U87's completely suck! :D

But hey, in all seriousness, do it. It's just a mic...not a car or something. Get it, use it, return it. Who cares? If you like it, just save up for one, ya know?

I know you're joking and so was I but I wonder if someone would actually know the difference if someone was to do that. I mean mxl makes some decent mics and I honestly think some people wouldn't ever even question the sound, in their mind it sounds better because it says Neumann.
