Is this sticky shed?

Hi,
as you may have seen on my other threads, I've just bought a Tascam MS16. I'm currently waiting for the relays to be replaced so I've been checking over the mechanical side of things.

All the tapes I have are 4 reels of Ampex (yes Ampex) 456. 3 of them just lock up the machine but one of them runs through at the right speed. However, the tape tension seems to be very high (just feeling it with my fingers) and makes quite a loud scraping sound past the heads. Also, when I rewind or fast-forward, the tape lifters seem to struggle to lift the tape away from the heads. Sometimes they don't manage.

Basically, is this just a lesser degree of sticky shed or possibly something worse?

Cheers
James

I think you can be confident that is sticky shed. Toss the tape, save the reels.

Yes it is sticky shed at its worst and I cant believe you put all 4 of those reels on your machine. Quit it!

Don't worry, I only spooled them up and let them run for a couple of seconds. I didn't let the tape fast-wind past the heads either.

I'll just buy four pancakes of tape and use the old spools. Thanks for the replies :)

I think it was carousel media where I saw them
Hmm, they have some 406 but no SM911 in that format. Interesting that they have 406 at all, though. I wonder how much of it they have left?

I searched for "shed" and this thread came up!

I searched for shed in google image search with safe search off and found this picture of cute women's toes in rose petals.
