Is this metal sound good?

VSpaceBoy - Thanks for listening and commenting. :) Much appreciated. Sheen meaning some kind of exciter on the master or something?

As in clarity. The second clip is better than the first, but still could use a little more. I'm not a fan of "exciting" per say, but yea I think you get the message.

Reminds me of a loud concert with ear plugs in. (ok, thats an exageration, but I'm just trying to make a point. :) )

BB,
Is good. davidK's suggestion is accurate.
I like the guitar sound you have - but then I don't know modern metal from text messaging.

RayC, thanks for listening and commenting. :) I appreciate you listening.

I don't know modern metal that much either. But occassionally, will hear a track that inspires. :)

Guitars are sounding much better on this mix-the bass and drums are getting drowned out by them though. I hear no real definition to the bass at all in there, and like Farview said, the drums could use the arena reverb on this type of music. Some of the double bass drum parts though, are taking on a jackhammer sound at times that is very strange sounding..

Ok, I see your point. I'll try to refine the sounds a little more. :)

Sounds very fake and thin.
Please don't be offended by my critique. Drums sound like they have been programmeed in Fruity Loops and guitars and bass sound DI'd.

Eck

Eck, your metal expertise is well known and respected. :) Don't worry you don't offend.

The Drums are using Addictive Drums with programming in FLStudio. The Bass is also in FLStudio. Not DI'd. Don't have a bass. :D. The guitars are DI's with output of DigiTechRP200 DI'd.

Don't have better opportunity in apt. to mic the guitars. :)

Now about this fake/thin business. What do you recommend to make it better given the gear?

Anfontan, thanks for listening and commenting. :) Appreciated.

The bass will be drown out if them guitars a cranked too much. Will re-EQ. Bass is lost a little, you're right. Jackhammer? Well it's programmed so the double drum sound is a little jackhammery. Will dynamic'ize more.

Musta missed arena verb comment. Will look for it. :)

better drum samples. Look into Drumagog, they ahve some nice samples or maybe some kind person on here would give you a few of their own recorded drum samples. :)

For bass, you really need to get a bass guitar or if thats just not possible then get a bunch of bass note samples and programme them in.

For guitar try a different FX. Ive had not bad results using a free plug in called
SimuAnalog Guitar http://www.simulanalog.org/guitarsuite.htm

There are clips of how the plug in sounds on the page also. Still sounds a bit fake but does have that sound like it could have come from an amp almost!

Wow.. talk about an ear. Props to eck for nailing your setup.

lol. Its pretty obvious the guitars were recorded direct, and back in the day I used to make dance music with Fruity Loops, so I recognised the bad quality of audio.

Eck

Well the drums quality should be from Addictive drums. The drumagog thing is expensive. All the things that are cool are obviously expensive. The demos can only do so much. As is, been trying to save to buy FLStudio6 and AcidPro 6 (or latest) for all mixing and recording. Adding more to the list is expensive.

There's nothing you can do about it, just saying things are expensive. :)

OK, will try either SimulAnalog (used it before), or will try different tones with less harshness and prebuilt verb from the FX Processor. Will have to re-record guitars for that. For bass will try to find some real bass notes. May have some soundfonts.

Thanks again all. If you have anything to add that might help with the mix or quality, jump in and share.

Post a new mix once you have found better sounds and Ill be happy to check it out.

Eck

Different Mix.

This is using SimulAnalog for the gits. Re recorded fast, playing is not as tight, and has some mistakes. Messed up the bass on this also. So to fix the guitar sound first, then attack the bass is the plan. The drums, well don't have anything better.

Still have to do the arena kind of verb on the drums as suggested. Haven't gotten to it.

Eck, when you do SimulAnalog, how do people use it. I have to record in acid pro clean, then pull in FLStudio for the VST host part and use the plugin. Then render back. So no realtime monitoring of how it will sound?

Thanks agains all. I agree that the old mix sounds like the guitars are not very clear.

the guitars sound even better to my ear. :)

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, whichever you prefer :)

the mix sounds very weak.
your guitars need to be alot thicker and tight.
and those drums need to be louder.

guitars sound nice and full and the bass purrs nicely...Ì'd check the timing on that duh-duh-duh part though. The guitar seems to lag a bit behind sometimes. I'd like to hear the voice though....drums could use some more definition.

Thanks for listening and commenting. :) My first real metal mix so trying to sort things out. Guitars do need to be tighter. You're right. This was a rough playing to get the sound down.

JoeyM, thanks for listening and commenting. :) Good to hear that you like the guitars and bass. I'm having trouble keeping the bass in place. I have changed it a thousand times and it sounds wrong. :)

The drums are also EQ'd differently now. Thanks again. :)
