I am going to get the following :
A Peavy mixer
Sehnniser 385 vocal microphone

I already have a computer with sbawe64 sound card.

What else do I absolutely need? Cables , adaptors?
Thanx.

Pier.

all you need is love. love.
love is all you need.

xoxo

ps.. is that all you need to do WHAT?

Peavey

That's all I use when I'm recording to my computer. Some focks on here don't like Peavey. I have two Peavey mixers one is about 15 years old and is quit nosie but the other is a Unity 500 and it's so quit I can hear a fart in the next room. It's only a year or so old. What is the mixer your using? Later, Donny!!!

Your mixer's nosy? Prowling around your recordings, sniffing in your drawers and peeking at your girlfriend? That's Peavey for ya. The Pol Pot of Audioland.

Noisy

Ya noisy like 60 cycle hum. It's an 701R I mainly use it for back up for our PA system. It's not so bad useing it live but no good for recording. The Unity 500 on the other hand is very quiet and I use it all the time to record to my computer. Oh I get it I didn't spell noise right Ha HA do that all the time I'm a little brain dead sorry... What is the mixer your using? Donny!!!
P.S. sometimes I forget how to spell my name Ha HA...

Looks like ya got the right idia. Have you bought that mixer yet? The reason I'm asking is if you don't need the battery power the Unity 500 has more in and outs. It also has insert for the first 6 inputs and 2 aux, line out and RCA outs and more. Check out Peaveys web site. It's a very good unit... Donny!!!

Donny, thanx for your reply.
Another question, if I get this peavy set, it doesn't come with mic preamps... so do I have to get another mic preamp to bring up the mic first?
but since I only want to record one channel at a time, isn't it okay to just get a mic preamp instead of a mixer?

Pier.

Mike Preamp

Well if you only use one mike that's all you need. The Unity 500 has a preamp built in so you could use 6 XLR condencer mikes. For the price ya can't bet it. A tube preamp cost about $100.00 and that's all you get is one in and one out. Don't get me wrong I have a tube preamp but I only use it on my Bass, gives it a nice sound. All in all $300.00 is a good price for what you get...Let use know how you make out... Donny!!!

So now, can anyone recommend an afforable mic preamp? Preferably, below 100 bucks.

Pier.

Art makes one for $99, and there are a few others out there in the $100-$150 range. used you might find one for under $100. They are pretty common, check your local music store.
You shouldn't just use it on bass, try it on vocals too. I think you'll be happily surprised.

ART!!

That's the one I have and I do use it on vocals in the studio with an NT-1 works real good. I paid $99.00 new and it's worth it. Later, Donny!!!

Um... can I say something....

I'm sorry to join this thread mid-stream,... but it appears to be most relevant to my questions, so I'll pose them here... I, like the fellow who started this thread, just got started and I had some very basic (please don't laugh at me) questions.. :)

I got a behringer MX602A mixer board (cause I heard they were good,.. hope that was true) and an SM58 mic cause I know those are good... and now I want to get the noise into my computer... (I'm phrasing this as simplistic as I possibly can) So... how does that happen...

Remember,... I'm an idiot... so don't go usin' fancy terms or obscure abbreviations on me... please just tell me if I need to go buy something more to make this work, or if I can just plug it into my line-in on the sound card and go to town... ok. thanks. bye.

All you need to do is plug the main outs (Left and Right 1/4" cable to 1/8" Stereo mini plug cable will do it, or the headphone out which is a stereo 1/4" to a stereo 1/8" cable will also do it) into the line in. Keep the gain on the mic pre down, too much gain will distort the signal. The Behringer isn't a good mixer but it is perfect for someone with your experience. I use a Behringer 1604A in my home studio situation and it serves my purpose just fine. I f I had the cash I'd put it out for a better board, but the Behringer isn't that bad. The SM58 is an awesome live mic. It works good for recording, but it changes your sound to a degree. It doesn't accurately reproduce the sound of your voice. It doesn;t make the recording sound like your voice, it sounds like your voice sung into an SM58. Doesn't mean its bad.

Mike pre amp

You can't just hook your mike to your computer you need a mixer or a preamp that has line out then you go to your line in on your computer that's the only way to get the right match or else it will sound like crap. Later, Donny!!!

Too bad those SSL and Neve melons cost a shitload more then the Behringers!
Jake

oh...

O.K. Thanks... I think that's what I needed... I had originally tried it out going through the mixer and out the main outs and into the sound card but it wasn't working... it may have been because my 1/8" adapter was a mono and not stereo... I'll try it again later...

P.S. Why isn't Behringer good? And if it isn't, what is good as far as a small, personal use mixer?

My ears tell me that my little MX602A sounds pretty good. For the price anyway. Bought it to use for SB LIVE couple of years ago and this whole thing kind of got out of hand and several thousand dollars and a mindprint en-voice preamp later i still use the little behringer for double miking my acoustic guitar sometimes. It's adequate. There's better stuff but also more expensive. The last time i looked these things were selling for less than a $100 US. Seems like everyone gets carried away with the gear side of things. True, you got to have good equipment to make a good recording but it's what goes into the mic that counts. I mean the playing, singing, and sonwriting.

So.....

What's the price range for the Mackie VLZ line? And since we're on the subject. What is the best, for the money, sound card to use? Right now I have a piece of crap and I'm just wondering what I should start out with... once again... I'm sure for six million dollars I could buy the best board/sound cards available,... but unfortunately, I'm gonna have to work with what I can afford... :)

WATYF

The Mackies are like 4-5x more then the Behringers. I highly suggest the Behringer line. The only thing that makes them inferior are it's mic pres. This doesn't mean they are bad, but it does mean that the Mackeis will give a differnt mroe 'warm' sound. Try them both out, then decide.
