Is there a difference between ATR40 and ATR30?

You're going to say "no, they both suck"--I know, I know. While most of you are trying to find more expensive microphones to replace what you have, I want to do the opposite. It's a long story, but basically I want to find cheap microphones to send to people I'm working with.

So I have an Audio Technica ATR40 that I bought 3 or 4 years ago. It sounds fine for what I'm doing--recording speech. In fact, I like it a lot better than the more expensive SM58, and that surprised me. I don't see a lot of information on the ATR40 anyplace and it looks like the same thing as the ATR30, but it's still more expensive. For my project, I would rather send people ATR30s than ATR40s to save money. What is the real difference between the two?

the difference = 10.

Sorry couldn't help it. :D

Not a fan of either mic.

Same specs on ATs website. The only difference I could find is the "special soft-to-touch paint"
Heh. That's weird. In different places, companies selling the mics say the ATR40 is the "professional" microphone and the ATR30 mic is for aspiring karaoke cheeseballs. Sounds like segmented marketing trickery to me. I guess I'll pick up an ATR30, hear the results, and stop boring and insulting people with my shoddy equipment selections. :)

Anybody have an idea of why my SM58 sounds not very good in comparison to the ATR40? I set up everything exactly the same except swapped microphones for my two tests (same room, same cabling, mic 8" from face). The SM58 has extra noise in its recording and is too low. I mean I read the stuff about the "bass boost" making SM58's sound warmer, but it's just unnatural sounding and makes the speech less clear. I could filter the lower frequencies out with software, but I guess it seems strange that so much is added to the recording in the first place. Makes me think I'm doing something wrong with my recording.
