from the start, i thought you were just being picky cos it's a pet hate of yours,,,,,,,,and i was right!

my pet hate is people being picky f**ers on forums just for the hell of it,which is what i thought you were doing,,,,but fair enough,,,i guess you have good reason....

I'm only being picky because other people are being either too general, or just wrong :D

It's a balancing act ;)

well,,now that the debates over,,,it doesn't matter what mic you use...

what with the eerie silence in the room.:laughings:

The MD 421 is an excellent vocal mic.

It is also a "must have" for a microphone locker as it will do almost anything. It is superb for brass and sax., works great on drums, excellent speech mic. In fact there is almost nothing that it won't do - it really *is* an all-rounder.

Having said that, though, if you are putting together a small studio a large diaphragm condenser would normally be the first choice for vocals.

If money is tight an AT 4033 is a good choice, or with the new TLM 102, even a Neumann becomes affordable.

If you want to make a statement the new Sontronics Saturn may be worth a look as well.

Wow! 30 answers, mostly jokes. The answer is- for some people, yes. The 421 is a fine dynamic mic. If you sound good through a dynamic, it may work for you. There is no vocal mic so good that it doesn't make someone sound awful.-Richie

I've wound up with 6 of them (4 U5s and 2 IIs), and I have no idea :) I use them on toms and other drums. I guess I'll try them sometime - my guess is that the MD-421-U5 will have less sibilance than the MD-421-II, since the latter seems to have a presence peak when compared to the former. I like the MD-441 on vocals.
