Is Octane the same as DMP3 or what?

Master of the Obvious
I can get a new Octane for $350 and have been trying to research it for the last few days. Everyone talks about the DMP3... not too much discussion about the Octane.

On this forum some say it's not quite as good as the DMP3 and it lacks gain... on all the other Forums I checked out (Harmony Central, Studio Forums, Gearslutz, Recording Newsgroups, Future Producers ect... I've done some reading) they say it's the same preamp as the DMP3.

So which is it?

This would be such a quick and inexpensive way to get 8 more Ins. I have a Layla24 w/ 4 Sytek Pres and 4 Soundcraft Spirit Pres. I've thought about getting another used Layla24 and 3 or 4 DMP3s for 8 more INs... but $350 and 1 box seems like a no brainer. I don't really want less than a DMP3 in sound quality though. The M/S stereo would be cool too.

Thanks,
B.

Yikes! Where can you get an Octane for $350? I'm pretty sure that's a hundred below wholesale! If that's not a typo, let me know where....

we would all love one for that price...but no one answered his question...:(

If they are the same preamp, I'd be shocked. The specs for the DMP3 show 66 dB of available gain, while the Octane only boats 50.

I never did get an answer to my question. Is that $350 thing a typo, or is somebody really selling it for that? :D

What I've read is that the Octane pres are based on the DMP3 but have a little less gain. But the Octane also has digital output, a M-S matrix, and a phase reversal switch on every other channel.

I just picked up a new Octane in a local music store for $399 as they were trying to unload it, probably having sat on the shelf for quite awhile I'm guessing.

The $350 was Not a typo. I got it from someone who just didn't use it and wanted to get rid of it... still shrink wrapped too :D
He said wholesale price is $400. He was just a lazy seller. It wasn't something I was really looking for, just came across it. It was too good a deal and a easy way to get 8 more ch. that I was planing on doing this winter.

I just won one on ebay for $345. The cool thing is that the day after I started watching the item, I noticed the location. Well...I know this lady at work who's husband owns a pro studio in that area so I asked her if it was his...and yup...it is...so NO SHIPPING CHARGES since he only lives 45 mins away from me.

:)

Nice Job! I was watching that too, just to see what they go for used.

I wish someone would chime in on the quality of the Pres.

so is less gain worth 8 preamps or more gain and 2 preamps...sounds like a personal decision i guess...
