ok this is probably a stupid question, but hey, where else am I going to get the answer?

there are 3 1/8" jacks at the back of my computer, on green, on blue, and one purpl-y. i wanna know which one is which. the green one i plug my speakers into (no I don't have proper moniters yet), and also headphones, so I'm assuming that must be the headphone jack. the purple one I can plug my mic directly into and I get good sound without much need for a preamp (there's a cheap-ass one in the computer yes?). the middle (blue) one I can't get sound out of but I think that might be the line in, as I don't have a preamp. the bloody things aren't labelled so i don't know!

help!

I believe your right.....you'll want use line in for instruments as the mic in is just for the cheesy little mics to use with a PC
Generally if you use the mic in I think your audio would overdrive the input and sound like shit so your bound to find out which one is which....or watch the meters in WIN audio window if the card has that capability

cheers.

i have been using the mic in (i think) and it's been soudning ok, but it could sound better. really need to pick myself up a cheap preamp or mixer methinks.

thanks for the help
