Salutations,

I am a long time musician have spent a lot of time in Pro studios. However I am now ready to build my own at home and need some advice. Here is what I want to do. (If I am vague please ask for some specifics and I will respond.)
I wish have a 32 track digital setup with basic out gear and decent mikes. I will be recording Guitar, vocals, keys, drums, bass, etc.
I also would like to produce my own cd's from home. I own my own home and live in the mountains. Soundproofing for external and internal is not a major concern. Not to many neibors or traffic planes. etc. I have a ood sized room to use for recording as well. So here is my question. What is a good "ball park" figure for a setup as I described. I want new equipment and something that will not be out of date uin six months. Also user friendly is a big plus. Thats it for now.Like I said if you need more specifice feel free to ask. Thanks for this forum! DWDRX

My suggestion is 4 ADAT's (*8tracks x 4=32)
This will cost you about $8,000.00 You could of course just get one or two and add on later....

A 32 channel board is gonna cost like crazy!

You could get 2 24 channel boards for about $2,000.00 each, and once again just get one and add on later.

Okay thats 12 grand, now another grand in cables, and 4,000.00 for effects, and at least $3,000.00 for some good microphones...

I'd say $20,000.00 could get you a 32 track setup, but you'd be better off with just 24 tracks, and use the other 6,000.00 for better mics and compressors etc.

Why do you need 32 tracks?

I hope this helps...

Dom,

Thanks for the fast reply! I was thinking about a 36 just so I would have all of the bases covered. But I guess 24 will do just fine. The cost sounds reasonable and affordable. One more question. Where would the best place to find this equiptment be? I live in The San Diego CA area. Should I find some sound only oriented stores? Or are places like Guitar Centers comprable in cost?
Once again thanks abunch! If you are interested here is my website. http://members.xoom.com/bleedstreet/Bleed.htm

I have some MP3 stuff I did on a Tascam PO2 4 track. DWDRX

DW, I just bought a small pile of gear for my home setup, and bought just short of none of it locally. I used the web mostly. Certain dealers online such as www.8thstreet.com or www.zzounds.com/a--2676837 have very competative prices. As a side note the boys at the San Diego guitar center will match most new internet advertised sales prices if you print the add and can prove it. But I have yet to find a mindblowing budget shop in this area. But I need to mention that my currant boss was the old manager at guitar center and rattled off names of suppliers he could contact for me if I was in the market for a big item. Granted he told me this well after I got all my stuff. I don't know... write me or something maybe we can at least score a deal for you. someone may as well benefit.

DWDRX,

I was in a similar situation about 18 months ago, decided on 24 tracks, researched all formats inside out, then chose stand alone hard disk (Fostex D-108 and D-160).
Anyway, my budget went rapidly out the window, from about 10k initially, I'm now approaching 30k, all should be completed by this spring. What i'm getting at is, no matter what you think it will cost, leave yourself plenty of headroom, so when you decide to buy the JBL LSR28p's instead of the Alesis M-1's, the Mackie 24-8 bus instead of the Studio32, the lexi's instead of the midiverbs, etc.etc.etc. you don't hit the wall with a half-finished studio, and no funds (or, in my case, a 3 month start-up
estimate i now laugh at, with embarassment!)
Best of luck, I would do it all again, just wouldn't make the mistake of telling my wife
"it will only cost this much and I'll be done before you know it!" Better to be honest from the start and take the blows upfront. (I did put in a pool for her last summer as part of the "agreement" so, technically I'm ok, but skating on thin ice!

Later,

BW
