i recently bought a sony mini disc recorder only to find that the software included with it doesn't allow uploads of recorded data from the recorder. someone was telling me that there is third party software that i can upload with. to me this thing is pretty worthless unless i can upload. if anyone has any information to aid me i would appreciate it, be it a software patch, third party software or a conclusive "no, that is not possible my friend". someone was telling me that pyro has this capability, but i havn't found that to be true as yet.
thank you much

Are you trying to upload a file and keep the format? Or you just want to get audio into the computer? I just got a unit and was going to use it for samples and the like...I am just going to use a stereo "Y' jack from the headphone output into two inputs on my Q-10 and into Cubase SX.

If your looking for true digital transfer I can't help you there...I havn't been able to play with it yet.

No, you can't upload with MD, I have Sony MZ-700, the USB 'soundcard' only allows downloading. You would have to use a stereo patch cord to your computer's soundcard, record your song, convert it from a wav to a MP3 and than upload.

this weekend at circuit city i saw a sony desktop and it had a built in md-drive! I never had seen that before. At first I thought it was cool and that it would be a way to keep the digital format. Then I figured it probably worked the same way and wouldn't let up upload - kinda like a CD-ROM drive in reverse.

I don't know for sure though, just being logical and cynical. ;)

This is Sony's logic with their copy protection-

You can digitally transfer music from your computer to the mini disc but you cannot transfer music digitally from the mini disc to the computer.

I guess they are afraid that people will buy music on MD (like you can even do that in the US) and and transfer it to their computer to distribute.

Now they do allow you to download music off the net and put it on MD and therefore not have to buy the CD in the store.

Makes perfect sense to me

Yeah, seems like if they want to keep the dying media alive then it has to do something DIFFERENT than other media. I find CD-Rs and harddrive based players to be superior for listening to music. I hardly ever do that with my MD and it is awkward when I do.

I use it to record sounds etc. and live with the analog out. This is really a good alternative to expensive DAT. Now that cd-recorded are becoming cheaper as well, the MD days may be over sooner than they have to be, given Sony's stance.

i think it is possible with at least one of the models

a friend of mine has a mac and she imports from her minidisc recorder all the time...i think that's the silver one (i have the blue one) and costs $350. i can't remember the name of the program. another person was telling me i should mount the mini disc player as a drive and just take it from there and edit it in another program. there must be some crack or program that can rip from a mini disc. i mean, if you can write to it, i can't see why you could read from it somehow...you know? damnit. sony sure knows how to ruin a product.

sony has a large vested interest in commercially-purchased music, so they tend to be involved in "anti-piracy" ventures as often as possible. minidisc seems to me the perfect sampler medium, and perhaps the best for bootlegging, but we're getting to the point where portable 4/8 track units have built-in cd recorders. the cd recording tech is also much more stable than it used to be. this all spells doom for minidisc, unless sony comes up with some really cool new idea related to it (they probably have several potential replacement technologies just waiting).
