Hello everyone. I'm applying to several schools in the fall for producing/engineering programs, like New York University and Berklee in Boston. Some of the programs let you submit records of your own. SO, I've been working on a lot of this stuff lately, and this tracks is one of the ones I might send in. It's a ska song, but all the horns are synth. The drums/guitars are real however.

Please give me some feedback on this track if you've got the time. Things might be added/removed when vocals get put in, because certain parts might be too clouded.

Here's the link:

Thanks.

sounds pretty cool. I would back down the piano a lot. The horns actually sound pretty good as does everything else. Im on some pretty nasty speakers so I cant give you much more but it sounds pretty cool so far. Last thing I can say is make sure the bass is nice and loud for ska.

good luck

Thanks man, I know what you mean about the piano, as soon as I listened to it after mixing it down I realized it was too loud in the mix.

Thanks for the feedback

ya that usually happens to me. I always have ot go back and revise. good luck

In all honesty, I don't think the piano goes well with mix at all. Is it a keyboard? ...I think a more classical grand piano sound would sound nice and creative. This piano/keyboard sounds kinda like one of those children's toy pianos. Please don't take offense, I'm just trying to offer some advice. The song itself is pretty nice, as are the piano melodies.

It's cool man, no offense taken at all. The piano is synth as well, taken from Fruity Loops actually, because I was only using it for that one melody I didn't want to go through the hassle of real piano. I do have a few other soundfonts of other types of pianos, like grands/electrics. I do know what you mean, this ones got a type of cheesy effect. I'll play around with it. I was thinking about making the horns do that melody, but that didn't sound too good either.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.

I agree w/ the comments above...

Also, I would kill or shorten the intro. I almost stopped listening, waiting for the "song" to kick in. I'm glad I waited though, it has a nice vibe. Just didn't like the intro. I can almost hear the vocals instead of the "piano".

I would also shorten the "vocal" bridge and outro. The song is too long at 5+ minutes.

Have fun in School!!!! You are on yer way!!!

i agree with rudalicious.

This mix sounds really congested to me.
The bass drum is hardly there.
Put the vox in, remix it then repost it.
Id like to hear it then.

Thanks for all this feedback guys. I really appreciate it. I'm recording the vocals later this week, and I guarantee you that the intro will be much, much more interesting. I know what you mean about it dragging on, because it's in half time and it's really dry right now.

The song might be really clouded too, I've been thinking about taking a few things out after the vocals get put in, because some parts get real cluttered. The piano might be one of the things to come out if this happens, I just really don't want to let go of that melody it has, so maybe I'll incorporate that melody into the vocals if its possible

Thanks again guys, I'll repost the track in a few days.
