Thank you.

I don't own an M9, but have used it at a friend's studio for male vocals. I was very impressed at the sound we got through a Joe Meek V6QCS. It was a great match for this vocalist, who has good dynamic range, and tends to use it on every song he sings. It especially sounded nice on the lower registers, very full without being boomy. Decent sparkle on the highs as well. I would like to take this mic for a spin on some other singers I work with.

Thanks Matt.

Would you mind being quoted in the Mic FAQ?

Anyone else?

Quote away. You can even use my actual name, Matt Pollock.

I tried out the VX2, VSM, and M9 and Summer NAMM last weekend. All I had to try on them was my own voice. The VX2 was big and warm, but also detailed. The VSM had a similar “big and warm” sound, but also had slightly more upper mids and maybe more of a “chest” voice, for lack of a better term. This is probably due to it’s hybrid design of a tube input stage and a solid state output stage. The M9 was a completely different animal. It had way less bass and sort of a nasally sound. I made the comment that I wasn’t crazy about it and the CAD guys started blaming the Behringer mixer they were running everything through. Looks like to me though, that if the M9 sounded bad, the others would have too. OTOH, a lot of people like the M9. Maybe it sits well in the mix – who knows.

Steve Earle first turned me onto the M9 and at first I scoffed... and then I became a fan. The other mics are also pretty damn cool.

With that said... from what I understand, CAD is more interested in making 'Taxi microhones' than "pro" microphones [larger market, better money]... they had a clean room in Ohio but [as rumor has it] shit canned all the people who were skilled in the art of condenser microphone capsule design and assembly.

Their 'quality control' was OK... but started to get a bit... uhhh, what's the nice word.... right, "spotty". I mean, I have mine, but we punted the line shortly after hearing about their 'staff reductions'.

I think we have a VSM or VX2 we can / will let go on the cheap, cheap if anyone is interested in it...

I've been using the VSM for a little while now as my main vocal mic for my small home recording set-up and have been happy with it. I think it's probably a better investment than the Rode and Neumann mics people always discuss in that price range ($600).
