a bit of background: I've been creating low quality recs for years with audacity and usb mics. I want to up the quality, so after a bunch of research, I bought a focusrite scarlette audio interface(2i2), and mxl v67g mic. besides audacity rec program, the interface software came with ableton live rec software, and I have tracktion, both of which i find really confusing to use. I am not tec savvy when it comes to music equipment, and any simple, no confusing tec talk, advice would be appreciated.
so, my first basic problem- for some reason, it only recs the right side of the mic when I record stereo, and doesn't rec at all when I rec mono. help!

You would have done better leaving this question in the Newbies section. :o
Stereo = two signal sources. You have 1 monophonic microphone. If you are not getting any signal in your DAW when you select a MONO track, then you are not selecting the correct input channel from your 2i2 (it probably defaults to the left/1 channel), sounds like you have the interface set up where you are plugging into the right/2 channel.

(edited to add: I see someone moved this back to the newbies section!)

Look for used gears on Craig's list or guitar center. Gotta tell us what u need to do.

thanks so much for taking the time to help me out!
so how do I select the correct input channel? there are 2 places to plug inputs on the 2i2, and the manual says that the first 1 is for guitar, 2nd is for vocal.

The manual is only giving you suggestions. You can plug your mic into either side.
