I'm just an idiot with a radio show...

Also - I personally wouldn't mind the spam if Dave became a contributing member of this board by downloading people's songs and critiquing them.

Dave needs representation on the board as a participating memeber, and this is why his posts are spamlike.

IF, his show drew new serious members onto the board, that would be good ... but that's not happening ... yet ?

I'd have to disagree. I think this whole Dave thing pretty much has shown that it WORKS to discuss things.

No, it actually doesn't. You just wait, this will never, ever end. I promise!

Hey,

If I posted here offering millions of dollars to you guys to help me get my rich, royal family out of Somalia, and all you have to do is give me a bank account number to "wire the money" to, I would say that is spam.

If I posted here offering airplay for your home-grown music on a show where live guests include the very industry people who you want to hear your music - and then make good on that offer - does it make sense to kill the messenger?

You guys make music primarily for fun, some with the hope that one day you'll make it big. I do this show now strictly for fun, with the hope one day of making lots and lots of money on sponserships to the show. Am I crazy thinking that there is a symbiotic relationship in there somewhere? Let me know...

Symbiots can kill one another, if one side of the relationship gets out of balance.

We need to progress slowly, and with patience.

This thread and other threads about advertising, etc ... are extremely important to this forum's health.

Also, in a symbiotic relationship, one always came first, and the 'guest symbiot' must recognize that and find humility, and in that humility, feed both.

And here I thought the mic forum was the only place where people got run off for "spam."

I don't see what's wrong with a simple, "I know this is spam, but I am offering a service you all might be interested in . . . Sorry to intrude, thanks for your time."

Polite, non-threatening. So what if it's spam. At least it's somewhat relevent. Better than the meet exotic women threads that got started a few months ago.

Perhaps, a "spammer" could post his information in the For Sale forum and then add a link to the thread in here with the subject of "SPAM."

That's my 2 pennies.

All right, it's time for me to say a thing or two...

There's spam and there's spam.

There's off-topic spam like "make lots of money" and "free sex here" (and no, I won't tell you where :-), which is the kind of junk that fills up your inbox. This is instantly obvious and merely annoying.

Then there's on-topic, targeted spam, where people or companies (invariably with a HELL of a lot more money than I have) come here to leech off the traffic that we've built up slowly here over many years.

Oh, some of it might be very seductive..."I can make you famous, kid" or "I sell the best microphones in the world, handmade by nubile virgins in the rain forest" or whatever...but every one of those posts is an ad that's not being placed, and that means less money for HR and less reason for me to spend time here.

I've tended to be a lot less concerned over money than I am now, but that was because I had a job at the time. I've gotten laid off from work, and that gets me focused on the basics (like food, clothing, shelter, and health insurance).

I know many of you think things have gone downhill since I started spending less time running the site, and you're right. I tried to get back into things awhile back, but it didn't work out the way I planned. The cats are helping. I'm trying to do a little bit every day, and I'm even working my way through some back email too.

But seeing these on-topic spams tends to paralyze me. On one hand, I like to be a nice guy and share information. OTOH...read paragraph 4 again.

Two years ago, I got all bent out of shape about some of the things that were happening here, and it was definitely a contributing factor to my heart attack. That's why I've kept such a low profile since then...I'm not interested in another one.

Ironically, Dave Baker said to me in email, "The lack of moderators on your site's forums with any editorial capabilities or aptitude could be a reason for the inappropriate posts that are rampant on your website."

So, Dave, what should I do about yours? Or to put it another way, what if I called in to your radio show every week and talked about what's going on at HomeRecording.com? Would that be fair? Or would that be an "advertorial"? How much would you charge me for that one? Or should I just figure on doing a 5-minute segment each week on home recording, and you'd pay me for it?

I'm starting to think it's time I got much more serious about the future of this site, and if that means rattling some other people's cages that have been getting a free ride, so be it.

P.S. to D.B.: as far as "editorial capabilities"...do a Google search on "David Fiedler"...and expect to be humbled.

P.S. to T.R.W.: I thought that "association" you talked about sounded like a neat thing, but then checked it out and found that it's YOUR VENTURE. How honest was that, discussing it as if it was being done by a third party? How many times have I spammed HR on Nowhere Radio?

Billing for Views

Dragon :

In our capatalistic society, some would view this as an opportunity for you to make money.

I suggest writing a formal letter to Dave Baker, (snail mail return reciept requested) and through snail CC or electonic ... make sure the proper elements in Dave's organization recieve the correspondance also, and indicate to them that any further posts by Dave will be considered advertisements and that they will be charged based on the number of views the thread recieves, just as some sights charge based on banner hit average ... etc ... so forth.

You have already legally established contracts with entities for banner advertisement, so you are safe in doing this.

Dave and his organization must accept this in good faith, as obviously you are attempting ... in good faith ... to tender a business transaction which is well defined on your domain.

If Dave then posts, then you send a bill.

And of course Dave's organization can be given the opportunity to reciprocate with advertising for homerecording.com ...

The possibilities are endless ... and if everything goes smoothly ... i'll get to hook up with those nubile wirgins :D

Dragon!?

I HAVE NEVER claimed the AOIRA was run by a third party! It's right there in plain site that I put up the site! The AOIRA is run by it's MEMBERS however, it's a trade organization!!

If you go to community on NoWhere, there's a link right there to HR, and you'll even find members here that have found HR through NWR. I plug HR in radio and print interviews all the time, as a great resource for indies. I've sent YOU traffic, and helped your members.

If you want to call me a spammer, and dishonest, then fine, go to hell.

W.

Y'know, this would be on-topic in the Marketing Your Music forum.

I don't wanna run Dave off the way we half ran off Harvey and Alan (and Waldo? Please stay, Waldo!!!). But the clinic is the clinic.

I'm so torn...:(

I'm stayin the hell out of the rest of this crap.

Sheesh. These threads wouldn't be half as bloated without the reams of people who feel it necessary to take the time to post simply to say something like "I have nothing to say" or "you guys should stop talking about this" or "this thread is stupid".

We're all idiots.

And Dave is our leader.

Chris (at work, so I can't listen to any songs)

Excuse me. I don't think I do this a lot, compared to many, many other people on this board.

I'm not sure exactly where your "anger" is directed here, but I hardly think I'm offensive to this post or any other.

Personally, I don't care if Dave hangs around here, or Waldo, or whoever. I seem to find room for everyone. But, see, these aren't MY decisions to make.

sheesh. I can't even see why MY post would make this necessary.

That was for you groucho...

Whose name may be very fitting today.

In defense of Dave i wanna add that while I was on his show I DID plug "homerecording.com" on the air. Maybe others may have done this? I don't know but he has been true to his word towards the members of this forum and hasn't made any false promises.

However Dave, I wouldn't have suggested challenging Dragon like that in emails.

Also perhaps maybe focus more on those who support you rather than exerting so much energy on trying to challenge those who find you an unwelcome presence. Some of your threads seem to ignore those who welcomed you and instead tried to jam it down the throats of your detractors.

Just to keep things as positive as possible, I've invited Mr. Fiedler to be a guest on the show. I haven't been plugging this website on my show because there has been concern in the past from members here that too much exposure of this bbs would bring too many new members. I'd welcome Dragon to discuss the resources here for the home recordist. Heck, even reciprocal links on the WTR website for this bbs could easily be set up...

Well, to repeat what I just wrote in response to your PM kgirl - I wasn't singling you out. Thought I was being humorous, but alas, it doesn't always come across on the web.

By the way, this thread is stupid and you guys should all shut up.:)
