All right, it's time for me to say a thing or two...
There's spam and there's spam.
There's off-topic spam like "make lots of money" and "free sex here" (and no, I won't tell you where

, which is the kind of junk that fills up your inbox. This is instantly obvious and merely annoying.
Then there's on-topic, targeted spam, where people or companies (invariably with a HELL of a lot more money than I have) come here to leech off the traffic that we've built up slowly here over many years.
Oh, some of it might be very seductive..."I can make you famous, kid" or "I sell the best microphones in the world, handmade by nubile virgins in the rain forest" or whatever...but
every one of those posts is an ad that's not being placed, and that means less money for HR and less reason for me to spend time here.
I've tended to be a lot less concerned over money than I am now, but that was because I had a job at the time. I've gotten laid off from work, and that gets me focused on the basics (like food, clothing, shelter, and health insurance).
I know many of you think things have gone downhill since I started spending less time running the site, and you're right. I tried to get back into things awhile back, but it didn't work out the way I planned. The cats are helping. I'm trying to do a little bit every day, and I'm even working my way through some back email too.
But seeing these on-topic spams tends to paralyze me. On one hand, I like to be a nice guy and share information. OTOH...read paragraph 4 again.
Two years ago, I got all bent out of shape about some of the things that were happening here, and it was definitely a contributing factor to my heart attack. That's why I've kept such a low profile since then...I'm not interested in another one.
Ironically, Dave Baker said to me in email, "The lack of moderators on your site's forums with any editorial capabilities or aptitude could be a reason for the inappropriate posts that are rampant on your website."
So, Dave, what should I do about yours? Or to put it another way, what if I called in to your radio show every week and talked about what's going on at HomeRecording.com? Would that be fair? Or would that be an "advertorial"? How much would you charge me for that one? Or should I just figure on doing a 5-minute segment each week on home recording, and you'd pay me for it?
I'm starting to think it's time I got much more serious about the future of this site, and if that means rattling some other people's cages that have been getting a free ride, so be it.

P.S. to D.B.: as far as "editorial capabilities"...do a Google search on "David Fiedler"...and expect to be humbled.
P.S. to T.R.W.: I thought that "association" you talked about sounded like a neat thing, but then checked it out and found that it's YOUR VENTURE. How honest was that, discussing it as if it was being done by a third party? How many times have I spammed HR on Nowhere Radio?
