Well, I had to tell someone :D

What I REALLY wanted to ask was..... (complete with stupidity), do all mics need preamplification (if such a word exists). What I'm saying is, does it depend on the mic type whether or not you need to? Excuse my stupidness. Ta

Any recording mic needs its output amplified ("preamplified") from the mic level output (millivolts) to line level (in the one volt range.)
Mixers, recorders and the like have built in preamps after the mic inputs. However, these are of variable quality (usually low) and for this reasn most folks buy outboard preamps which then go to the line inputs of other equipment.

I think there are a few types of mic (crystal?) that do have high outputs at the volt level, but they are of extremely poor audio quality and useless for recording (except possibly some retro special effect.)

LOL

Some use Phatom Power ( ie power )

Some you can just plug right into a line input, like a guitar, bass etc.

some even come with batteries for power.
