A question... if I've posted some of my own material should I remind the board that it's there by bringing it up to the top every now and then? Should I just hope that people will seek it out? Or should I just move on as I'm inclined to do?

Jon

The only time I "bump" my own song is via responding to people who have commented. Then, you should! And I just do that after a group of people comment. Not every single reply!

My feeling is, to bump your own thread just for recognition is also an act of pushing other threads down a notch. Its neither fair nor polite. Every thread has a shelf life. I say let it seek its own level.

So, do as you have been doing.

I don't personally mind if someone bumps his song back up if it hasn't had much feedback. I've seen times that a lot of stuff got posted at the same time and threads would drop on out of sight before anyone caught them.

Should we be like Simon???

I think it depends on your individual purpose for going to this site. If you want feedback on your songs, then damn it, you ought to give others feed back too. Hell, that's just manners. If your just curious, then that's okay too. Just don't expect any feedback for your stuff.

I do wonder if we shouldn't be a little tougher on each other though..... like Simon on American Idol. Not as brash as he is, but honest in what you really think. I get the impression we tend to be more like cheerleaders than critiquers. But maybe that's the way it ought to be? Hell, motivation is big part of this too. Comments on that??

I have to agree with this one. I have heard some stuff that I am sure has been recorded in a studio, and then they come on here and say "hey, the albums done...take a listen" and I never see them post a reply to anyone else. I listen to it and if in my opinion it sounds studio recorded I say so. I am not interested in someone moving their song up some chart on mp3. Now I manly do covers so when I ask for a listen I want feedback on my recording and mixing abilities, or lack thereof. If I do an original, well, I know that I am no great songwriter so I am looking again for overall sound feedback. You guys are the greatest and I always take a listen. I love giving feedback on a lot of the stuff...that is if I could get my wife off of my back long enough to do it!!!

........Hey, you're not starting a big bitch fest without me, damnit!

I agree with most everything said so far. I usually wont comment on peoples post that i dont recognize. I figure this is a comunal thing. We are all here to help eachother. If you dont help, you really dont deserve the courtesy in return. I think that if someone new wants to take part, they should take some time and explore and comment on other peoples material before they expect to be commented on themselves. I also agree with the reply that stated that if something is just plain bad, it's not really worth slagging just for slagging's sake. You know...."if you dont have something nice to say................etc."
I too comment mostly for content's sake. I have been a practicing musician for a long time, but i am by no means an engineer. I do feel qualified to mention wether or not the writing is creative, but I try to limit my comments on technical aspects to things i have learned and experimented with. Just spitting out useless jargon that is either just an echo of someone elses reply, or something that was just read somewhere doesnt do the submitter much of a service if its not somewhat factual.
There are people qualified to help with engineering issues in our forum though, and we should consider ourselves lucky that they are here. I feel that I have greatly benefited from the posts and replys of everyone in here that has done so with sincerity. This is a great place for us all, as long as we all take part to the best of our ability. g

I'd rather someone was honest. It serves no purpose to say something is great when it has obvious flaws, whether its performance oriented, song oriented or a question of tracking and mixing. The key is being constructive. It does no good to simply say "this sucks" either. I feel like I better have something to say that can help a person be better if I am going to critique.

Really, its simple. Praise the positive stuff and offer help on problem areas. I think thats the spirit of this forum. I've had a lot of help over the years and I wouldn't have grown if people hadn't given me honest critiques of my work. Its all in the interest of helping each other make great music.

Yeah, I use a cable modem too and it is FAST!! I used to have dialup with a 56k modem and once we moved that sucker was slllllllllloooooooowwwwwww. So, I opted for the cable modem, glad I did!!:p

Takes a less than a minute to download a 3 megabyte file on my Cable Modem.

I used to sit for hours on dial-up downloading mp3's off napster:D

......exactly............ what he said:D

......I have a dial up connection......and yes it is slooowwwwwww!
..........but worth it!

This is a good topic. I can say that when I've listened to a song, I've also commented on it. So, I always comment on what I listen here. I figure, that if I "waste" :D time listening a song, I might as well share my thoughts on the song. No matter how feeble the comments are. Of course, my thoughts are only opinions. That's what I'd expect from others too. It doesn't matter if you don't have much to say. Just say something. It all helps.

Gee, I hope I'm not kissing yer ass, but you have a good point there SAB. :D

ditto, crankyone

if i listen i try to comment, they might not be very indepth comment's, but i still do it. im here to learn, and listen to some good tune's!! it's great to be able to come here and breathe in all this creativity! it's a priceless resource for home reccer's all over the world. and i value all the effort it take's for everyone here to create and post all these song's, not to mention the effort it takes to listen and reply!!

so in short, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PEACE

Well, I don't know if I'm on the list of black plague or not, but I apologize to those who have commented on mine, but I didn't return the favor. My excuse for not paying everyone back is mainly one of time. I've got a slow phone modem, and it would take hours to download and listen and then reply to everyone. I try to catch a tune when I can, and I try to say something useful and positive. If I do comment on someone's tune, I don't do it just so they will listen to mine. I know a lot of people have checked out my stuff, but then don't comment. That's cool, I wish they would, but I'm not complaining...I really really appreciate all the feedback I have received, it's really kept me going.

I like to sit up late at night on the weekend drink a few beers...sometimes more than a few...and check out a lot of the postings. Beats listening to the radio ANYDAY!!! I am so sick of boybands, Britney and rap metal that I could just friggin scream!!! Ok Ok I am not completely sick of Britney...as long as the mute is ON!!!

too bad nwr doesnt have the status features that napster did - the bar graph and the kbps and whatnot... on napster i would get like 1 or 2 kbps... 3 if i was lucky so you see how slow!!!!

if i had cable i would listen to everybodys stuff.

i dont know if my comments would be any good cause im socially challenged.

:p

24 hours later.. there has been a billion opinions

let me get a few things said..

mixmkr - imhop you are like the chairman of the board here.. If I see you not reply to your own threads, I doubt it's because you were 'lazy' like you said.. You just didn't.. nuff said. :D You help out so many people here, that they start threads specifically addressed to you! I think that says it all right there.. I feel like I can't close the coffin on my threads until you have spoken on it..(although sometimes I wish you would comment more on the mix itself rather than content, but I'll take it!) :D Your one of the best things about this joint imhop..

rushfan33 - everything's cool! :D I will be commenting on your tune shortly.. (because I already listened to it.) ;) :D

macle - your right! you do have nothing to complain about.. Your threads are usually the biggest and require you to do next to nothing because the music and recording is always soo good..(deservedly so) I saw someone here who shall remain nameless (Guernica), and his thread started getting big and he said something like, "thanks everyone I really appreciate it, but I'm going to stop responding to this thread and bumping it to the top... but I do appreciate it." He had received all the mix tips he needed for awhile.. People still dropped comments to tell him they liked the tune, but he stopped bumping it after a certain point when it was nothing but "ata boy." He went on to immediately respond to someone elses thread. That is how he showed his appreciation.... and that was one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed on this board..

Everything is cool in the frig dudes! :D

I have seen some action here since my last visit as far as new people dropping comments to others.... and it was good. :)

As for all the lo-fi people, I think it is still possible to drop a comment.. I see people who listen to my tunes on lo-fi, and still give intelligent comments.. Even if it's "thumbs up" or "thumbs down." It doesnt take long to get it streaming on lo-fi at Nowhere.. I know people who check out my tunes on dial up..

Like SLuiCe said, 'do what you can when you can'

For me, it takes about 10 seconds for a song to start palying on hi-fi, and usually less then 5 minutes to reply.. That is also why I listen to so much shit.. That's one of the great things about Nowhereradio.. You can check the playback stats and see what's happening..

Anyway, shut the f up Sab!

I'll spew some more nonsense later, unless it is time to disembowel this thread..

Uh, is that a hint? To be fair, I don't think you should be complaining either. You post a lot of songs, and you get tons of praise and "ata boys".

Sorry if I overstayed my welcome. Anyway, that was the last song from me (as the title of my thread implied). As I said, a huge thanks to everyone.

macle

hold the phone man!! It sounded to me like I was giving you major props.. Hence the"deservedly so" part of my reply..
