Thanks Waldo

for your time and the good advice.

Hopefully these will get to the Mastering stage...eventually.

H2H,

Cant Explain - Well done! I would normalize it down a tiny bit, as the mp3's a bit hot, but the balance seems to be pretty good. I would drop the bass level a tiny bit, and the crash at about 2:00 almost made me crap my pants.... Even out the cymbols a bit, and bring up the kick, eq. it a bit lower. Snare is really short... fake? Or is the drummer a 'gripper'?

Lastly, a tiny bit more volume and the vocals, and in my opinion, you got a perfect mix :)

Like the song, got that 'staring at you from the top of my head' feel to it :)

Theron,

One day you gotta resize that image on your bio, it takes up the whole page and more :)

Bed of Discontent - Nice acoustic ditty! I'd probably either layer the vocals, or add some constructive chorus during the chorus of course. A little bit more of microverb and add sustain. Should help a bit overall. Sounds like you already have a tiny bit of microverb/hall on the vocals, but it could be the acoustics of the room as well.

Volume balance is just right. Stereo balance sounds high on the right, maybe spread them both out a bit. Stereo is tough with one piece + vocal...

Like the tune, the melody's gonna stick for a while, it's so simple it sticks :)

VI,

Lol, my God, make sure you put the album back in the cover when you are done, I don't want no scratches on that LP ;)

Last Song - Vocals need some low, harmonies need a little more seperation, probably a quarter hair quieter as well. Real drums needed, sounds like the last set I played on CD cases ;) ... Guitar is a tiny bit rich over top of the bass, seperate the two a bit more, or center the bass, and bring the eq up on the highs for the guit.

Never thought anyone would want to do this kind of a cover ;) Haven't heard that song in a long bloody time. Can't even remember who wrote it for sure, have to dig through my LP's upstairs! Thx. for straining my memory!

Welp everyone, I think it's time for me to grab a nap.... Finally, yes, after a few days... hehe. Thanks all, post more if you like, I'll critique next chance I get!

-from DrStawl You accepting extra tracks for this work in progress?
I was trying to get a guy over at the "clabberin" website to do some orchestral sounds, but haven't heard back from him...

If you'd like to have a stab at it, that'd be great!

Please download this version, as it has my "liner-upper thingy" mixed in the front.

WTF is a "liner-upper thingy"?

Ignore the content of the LUT especially the tempo, it has nothing to do with the song itself. Here's how you use it:

1. (My step) I placed the LUT in the front of my mix (we'll call that the mix). ;)
2. Download my mix, and load it into the multitracking software of your choice.
3. Using the mix to play along to, record your part(s).
4. When you are ready to send me your individual track(s), mix in the LUT part from the original mix. I would put a volume envelope on the mix, fading out everything after the LUT. Render the mix which will end up being the LUT (from the original mix), followed by your track, all on one track.
5. Listen to your track, making sure it contains the LUT, followed by your solo track.
6. upload
7. I d/l your track, plop it into Vegas, zoom in REALLY close on the LUT, and slide your track around until it lines up exactly!!!

Hope that clarifies it, but if it doesn't, please ask. How's that saying go? "The only stupid question is one that isn't asked."
My only complaint was the overdone reverb.
Just the vocals, or the whole thing?

I'm still in that phase of overdoing everything. I backed the slider down from 30 to 15 (on the lead vox) for this new mix.
That even got Marilyn excited.
Would that be Mrs. Stawl? or a cat? ;)

Either way, I'm glad to be able to excite someone/thing, and look forward to adding some stuff to this track...

Thanks, Waldo!!!

And I'll try not do that to you again soon...

quote from waldo:
<Definately let me know when you get a multi-track record going, I'd love to help you out, even just for the excuse to listen to more funked up tunes

What role did you play in this? >

Waldo,

I was just helping out the sound guy at this festival, you know, operating lights, setting up equipment, etc, and I asked him if I could mix for two of my mates bands...he was a really nice guy, and he let me do the mix. Now I have done gigs before, but I thought it was great that he let me use and operate his rig...very nice. Anyway, I didn't even know that the show was being recorded - I was pretty pleased when I heard the results.

That was really my first taste of a 'big' gig (big in the sense that I was operating a system that miked all the drums!!!!) I enjoyed it heaps.

As for the mulittracked recordings, well I am saving now for the Digi 001 (as mentioned in the other forum), and I hope to slowly build a studio around that. Now if I can get the equipment together before say July, my mate Zak (Lead singer and guitarist from Contraband) will stay here, and we will record an album...the problem is getting the money...or waiting while I earn it :)

I would love any assistance with the recording phase...from mic placement to recording techniques..wahtever...I am pretty much learning the ropes as I go (I hate to admit it, but I'm only 17...)

So yeah, by about say June, I think I will have the gear to do a 'proper' multitrack recording.

K

PS May be a stupid question, but have you heard of Vic Wooten...if so, what do you think???

Special K,

Welp, that's what this whole website is for, getting you all learned up :)

Vic Wooten... Why does that ring a bell? Anybody?

Name strikes me as familiar, but at this stage of advanced sleep deprevation my mind plays tricks on me sometimes.

So, who else has tunes for me to critique today?

W.

Victor Wooten.. I think he plays bass with Bela Fleck..

Amazing player.

Ah yes, indeed ;) Him and his brother 'Future Man' with that wacked out 'instrument' that's semi-percussion/semi-guitar/semi-keyboardish....

He's definately got a mean streak in him when he plays that bass.

W.

I just posted a thread about Bela Fleck in the cave. I saw a live concert of theres on TV last week. First time I had seen them. victor played a bass solo that rivaled any I have ever seen. Sorry to go off on a tangent...Keep posting them songs!

AtomicToyz,

http://nowhereradio.com/atomictoyz is sooo much easier ;)

Kick on the drums needs a definate boost, almost sounds like it was mic'd further back. Are the drums real? I hear no hi-hat, and the cymbals sound as if I'm holding a lightbulb to my ear and tapping it to hear the filiment vibrate... Heh heh, if you listened to Revelation it was the first tune done with the SR-16, most of the definition is gone because of too much verb. Im still trying to get better drums

Bass guitar is just about at the right level, maybe a tad higher. Im not normally a bass player, so its buried out of embarrassment

Guitar tone is a tiny bit high, and a bit too far right. I got a wah running as a envelope filter, thins it out and makes it kinda nasally..its what I wanted at the time, and my headphones in which I used for mixing late one hurried night if blown on the right channel

I might use a bit more sustain on the guitar every now and then, there's alot of empty spots and hollowness to it. Maybe chorus, or a second guitar track? I didn't have the levels high enough on the rhythm guitars so if your kinda deaf you'll miss them completely.

Excellent finger tricks though, I'll never be able to play the guit. like that! Good listen. Thanks, Im hoping to be able to fix somethings and remix Revelation, I didn't spend alot of time mixing it, it was done for some friends to have at work listening with headphones while working on computers. Not my best work obviously and no mastering...Just fast and dirty Im lazy tonite kinda production.
W.

I got my YSM-1i on thursday and now I can actually get back to recording hopefully, I have a respiratory infection slowing me down. Im probably going to spen a few weeks listening to Dream Theater and Steve Vai thru them until my ears adjust properly.

Peace,
Dennis

mgiles7,

Yeah, he's definately a wild man, gotta say I enjoy it every time I see him go off on a tangent. He's a bit unconventional at times, but then, the Flecktones are nowhere near 'conventional' ;)

AtomicToyz,

I probably missed the rhtym guits because I was listening on studio monitors. If I put the ear gear on I usually have issues with critiquing a mix due to my deafness, I can mix that way, and just do the one on one off trick/switch, switch, etc. but it's tough to critique unless I've listened to the song more than 50 times.

I'd definately boost those suckers, because if it's inaudible to me, it'll be way too quiet for normal folk ;)

Overall a rich performance, would love to hear the final mix when you get 'er done :)

W.

Anyone else want to drop one in this thread? Or is it getting too damn big?

W.

Pretty cool, but I'd definately change the genre. No way in heck this is 'Alternative' ;)

Only thing I can really say, that for this genre of music, fake drums are generally acceptable, but, they sound waaaay too fake. At the very least, drop them a little bit lower and add a MUCH heavier and more sustained kick (or even a good 2 second drop beat in tune).

I'd probably find a way to fit some sort of a bass line in there. Some of the background effects (the slide near the beginning) should probably be turned up. There's a fairly wide range of sound in there, but several areas on the spectrum are dead, need to fill them in. Best way, add the bass line :)

I got some killer drop beats you might wish to try. They are a bit dangerous in that they start in the 200Hz range and drop to less than 2Hz, pure wave-form. Bust one or two sets of studio monitors by cranking them up...

Adds to the punch of the tune though.

Overall, I like, just needs that extra 'spice'.

W.

One other thing I just noticed, listening to it for a while.

The 'see-saw' effect that comes in at about 1:42 gets really bloody annoying. It's not quite in rythm, and doesn't go anywhere, just the same two notes repeated over and over. I was expecting a solo the first time, it was okay, didn't bother me, but then.....

This is what I call the 'insanity' melody. Fine once, but makes people wanna throw the song out a window the next time they hear it.

Lemme know when that's gone so I can un-coil my spine ;)

W.

Uh oh, mixmkr, maybe ya better refer to my first post ;)
