mwarkentin,

I'd also be interested in how you are micing the guit amps, what mics, and what amp...

Guitars: BC Rich w/ Screamin Demon P/U through a Marshall Guv'nor into a.. 61-64 Fender Deluxe Reverb (?)(not sure..). 3 distorted tracks were recorded with a Shure SM57 slightly off-center, and angled around 40 degrees.

Drums could very well be out of tune, I don't know anyone who really knows how to tune them (from a small town).

What did you mean by overall normalization? This is an unmastered mix..

Myx62,

Synth strings need the verb/chorus effect dropped a bit. Overall mix is really wet. Common for the brit-pop feel of old, but it's still a bit thick. The sustain seems to be a bit dragging as well, alot of notes interacting negatively with eachother.

Drums, well, you know already ;)

Turn that lead guit up! Disappears alot. Some places it's fine, others it's hidden.

Vocals need to come down a bit, maybe a little lower eq. A little extra compression would help as well, or some cautious volume envelopes...

Did I hear a hickup around 2:48? Sounded like a tiny loss of volume across the board.

mwarkentin,

Was wondering because I heard some slight hum/distortion (possibly from overdriving the mic) during the intro and some other parts. Hard to fix during mix down...

Normalization means bringing the whole mix up to the maximum possible volume overall. Usually it's done by finding the highest peak, and bringing the overall volume up until that peak is just below the clip point. Part of the mastering process generally, but I'll typically do it during the mix just so I can hear everything...

Yeah, there's no way I can retrack these tracks, so I have to work with what I've got. This is the third time I've recorded anything, and each time seems to be quite an improvement. I'm pretty happy with how these tracks turned out.

You do NOT want to hear the guitar sound I had on the last cd I recorded. :)

You're absolutely right, I screwed up & posted the wrong version
of that song. That was a bad mix I should've deleted from my pc.
embarassed? yes discouraged? no

S'ok, we've all done it ;) Fire up a link to the newer mix and I'll check it out.

pbouchard,

Some mastering would help, spectrum seems a bit light on the top end. Generally okay for this genre though.

Other than that, just fine.

W.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. As a newbie, I'm still learning what it is I still need to learn -- and I'm sure there's a whole lot I need to learn!

T R W,
From a demo done at my home. They were done in my basement using an Akai DPS12i. By no means are they pro quality but they're pretty decent. Redoing them in a studio will vastly improve the sound and mix quality!

Why don't I use the normal format? Seek out and critique each thread individually? Simple, I've got a very disorganized mind (believe it or not), and keeping my train of thought all in one thread is easier for me.
Jeez, why a special treatment? Ain't we all disorganized?

Please listen and if you feel like commenting, bump that thread. I won't be checking this one for it.

reaper sg,

Wow, took forever to download these... But anyways, here we go, in no particular order:

when you lied:

First thing that hit me, drums are hidden, need to come up more, kick is burried.

Big hickup at 1:00.

Vocals are way forward, can barely here the tune behind the lyrics. A tiny bit of chorus on the vocals could help a bit too. Eq a little bit lower.

Is there a bass guit in this? If so, can't hear it, if the vocals come down a bit, it might help, otherwise, turn that sucker up, lots of bottom missing from the mix.

Rythm guit could use a little bottom eq as well.

Distortion and popping occasionally throughout.

island of lost dreams:

Ditto on the above for tracks.

That cymbal is killing me! Bleeding ears ;) Splash or ride? Way high, edge needs to be taken out, or drummer needs to lighten up on it... I'd say the latter... Especially in the intro, hit it once or twice, not 30 times a second ;)

Solo around 2:30, murdered by drums (toms I think), all of a sudden they are there, muddy, and over powering. Guit needs to be turned up a bit during that solo. Snare seems hidden. Drop 'em, and clean them up if you can. Probably a micing issue though, so they may need to be retracked.

moons of mendachi:

Mix is pretty muddy, too much bottom, not much high. Vocals are pretty good here, but as above, could deal with being dropped back a bit.

Toms muddy and loud again. Snare's a little better, but needs a bit more pop.

---

Overall, I'd say drum micing and mixing is the biggest issue throughout all of these, next would be vocal balance/placement, after that, some things too hot, some too quiet, causing distortion and popping where you don't want it, the rest is easy stuff.

W.

Jorooooo,

Rythm electric could deal with coming forward a bit. Ditto with the lead, some eq might be in order, a little compression, although, it's a bit back for me to tell. Bass guit could be eq'd a bit lower. Slim up the stereo a bit me thinks, this is coming from a one-eared man remember.

W.

Jeez christian, made me have to open three windows, read three things, AND download, now who's getting the special treatment???

I'll comment over there...

Thanks for taking the time to listen, your constructive comments
will definitely help us when we do these up in a real studio.
When the project is completed I'll post up some vastly improved versions for you to check out. And I'll figure out how to stream them.

thanks again,
Rick

I already sent you an hour and a half of material culled from Nowhere in my demo show.

If you want me to forward the playlist I can do that too.

Hehe, I listened, but that wasn't for 'critiquing'. Besides, if I got nitpicky about radio programs, I'd NEVER sleep! (Even though I already rarely do...)
