Output jacks on acoustic guitars are good for things like tuners and not much else. Don't confuse the instrument with the sound it's SUPPOSED to produce. I prefer the sounds of my acoustic guitars to anything my Vax 700 will ever produce...but I cannot REPRODUCE the sounds of my acoustic guitars live, and you can't either.

No one said they prefered a piezo sound, did you not see the end of the third page when we were debating that? The thing is, you'd do much better with a decent acoustic with a good pickup system (transducer, mic, and magnetic being ideal). Again, see Michael Hedges if you need proof.

I'm gonna' go easy, because you're a child, but if you're gonna' make comments like that, it'd be helpful if you could let me know how many shows you've actually played with an electric/acoustic through a PA in your life, and also how many shows you've played with a Variax acoustic through a P.A. Hell, for that matter, just let me know how many live shows you've SEEN where somebody was playing an acoustic vax that sounded like "just plain S."

You obviously think I don't have decent acoustic guitars with good pickup systems. You'd be wrong about that....I've had them for longer than you've been alive, but I thought I knew a lot when I was 17 too, so I'll go easy on you.

How many I've played: somewhere around 200, mostly in coffee houses and bars, a couple of fancy parties, and maybe 20 outdoor festival things. No, I'm not as cool as you so I don't play arenas. I've never played with a Variax live because I hate the feel of the guitars and I'm loyal to my analog gear. BTW, I only just now took the time to read your entire post at the beginning of this thread, and I must say, you're even more of a dick than my fiancee's ex-boyfriend, whose entire personality revolves around his genitals.

Peter Rowan can do it. Tony Rice can do it. David Grisman can do it. Del McCoury's entire band plays in front of a single LDC, jumping all around to get in the sweet spot for solos at 200mph.

You can do it too.

You're just not trying hard enough.

Anyway, what I got out of your post is that you have zero experience playing an acoustic variax live, but you feel qualified to call it a p.o.s. Sounds like bias to me as opposed to some informed opinion, but I appreciate your honesty about your ignorance and bias.

I've got no clue what's up with my rep points, I just accept it and move on with my life. You're right, I am biased against Variax guitars. I get it, it's a useful gadget, it means less switching and more options. Believe me, I understand, I was all up on Line 6 a few years ago. And since you're playing live, most people aren't there aren't going to care about your tone much anyway, to them it's just guitar. It's just not what I would choose.

Yeah man...works great with bluegrass bands at moderate stage levels...do it with a full-on rock band several nights a week when you're competing with electric guitars and then come back and tell me how much your audience LOVED the screaming feedback from your acoustic.

Fair enough, but you said it yourself..it's not (solely) about the audience man...it's about the tone. I play better when whatever I'm playing sounds great to me, and I think most musicians are the same way. Not your bag, fair enough, but keep an open mind.

THE ONLY effect I used was some verb on the slide...my timing sucks, and I don't even OWN a slide (it's a pocketknife). Anyway, my personal opinion is that each of the sounds by itself is pretty lame and I'd prefer the real deal for recording. But for live stuff, I'd be thrilled with each and every one of these tones. They're all straight from the output jack of the guitar, and I need some of you to upload clips of how your acoustic guitars sound straight from the output jack. Maybe you'll change my mind.


Hey that sounds nice. Man, what is up with this kid going on and on about what a tone freak he is and then I check out his myspace and his recording sounds like complete crap. That's funny.

Hehehe, hahaha. My recordings are just quick demos to get my songs up, as I said earlier in this thread.

Quick demo? That’s is no excuses. I imagine that what Chris did was just a quick demo was well. I make quick demos all the time and they don’t sound that bad. Take some pride in your work, especially if you’re going to fight with people talking about how important your tone is to you.

O.o. I do take pride in my work. See theleftproject.com for more samples of said work. Also, myspace.com/zacanger myspace.com/theleftproject and myspace.com/lovepuppetstudios are all my work. And keep in mind that I'm still relatively new to recording and am using a Fostex MR-8 to do the actual recording, with generally no post-amp processing at all. If I could I'd send you some samples I'm particularly proud of, but the one in particular I'm thinking of is well over 20 MB and I don't feel like begging space to host that somewhere.

I appreciate that very much. The "mando" sound is the weakest i.m.o., but in fairness, the guitar doesn't have a "mandolin" setting...it has a "mandola" setting, and I capo'd it on like the 9th fret, lol.

The only point I was trying to make is that the guitar is not complete shit. Maybe the guy playing it (i.e., me) is, but the instrument is a well of creativity.

I use exactly one setting live..."Acoustic Jumbo." All the other gadgets on the guitar are (to me) nothing more than toys....it's fun to play "dueling banjos" in between real songs when people can't figure out where the hell the banjo is coming from :D

now now, lol. We all know there are a million great musicians out there who don't necessarily translate that well when they record themselves... and he's 17, right? I couldn't record a fart when I was 17, so let's not run him off. :D

I can joke around a lot, but if I can be serious for just a nano-second, this site (and others) made me fall in love with music again after I was pretty much burnt out on it, mostly because the energy here is more positive than negative. I love music, and I love musicians...of all ages...even c7sus; he's a musician at heart, he just refuses to prove it to the world...not everybody is a big dick like me that needs to prove stuff to the universe...thank God.
 
You know, I love this site too. I'm not burnt out yet, at least not too much, and this site might not be able to make me fall in love with music again, but it's definitely the best recording-oriented forum I've been able to find, with the best people of any of the multitude of forums I've belonged to over the years. Cool people who know what they're talking about. It's awesome.

Sorry bud,I dont want to discourage you from continuing to play,but I'm
gonna call bullshit on this one.I dont think you have much experience at
playing out.If you did,your recorded performance would be much tighter.
Recording quality aside,the stuff you have posted at theleftproject does
not sound like a band with 200 gigs under their belt.
You really should gain some experience before you comment on guitars and
amp tone.While I did not care for the variax that I played,I would certain
ly choose it over a Daisy rock any day of the week.

I didn't do all these as The Left Project, that'd be impossible since there are no other band members. I've played as Zac Anger, with Hayley Jane, with Cry Monday, in a duo with my father, and a couple of random jams with whoever was available. You might choose a Variax over a Daisy Rock, okay. So would I, but I'd then sell it and buy something real. My point was not that Daisy Rock is better than Line 6, just that I got an amazing tone from a relatively inexpensive guitar with decent (ANALOG) pickups and a small (ANALOG) tube combo, but I've always been disappointed by the tone from modellers, be they guitars, amps, or pedals. Read closely next time, maybe you'll understand what I'm saying.
