Nope. You're The Original Poster.

Good link, dobro. I really enjoyed it too.

Though I did notice that repost about the 3D Audio Pre CD I posted quite awhile back.

Yes it is a great article... no mention of ribbon or PZM mics though.

Some surprises... the Peavey mic, the AKG C1000... I think opinions on this mic are a bit mixed here at the BBS... didn't you just sell yours RE? A lot of people (including myself) have either one of the Rode's so good to see they get a mention and the AT's... just for Ed!

...but also no mention of what are the best headphones to use for stereo micing... hehehe :D

Excellent article. I was particularly interested in the comments about the Earthworks QTC1s, because I received mine in the mail yesterday, and I am in the process of "wringing them out" I will post my comments when I have a little more experience with them, but the preliminary comment is: nearly perfect for my application.

On headphones: Another story of trying out all the "popular recommendations" and being dissatisfied with thier obvious lack of accuracy. The final word: Beyerdynamic DT831. These are almost like listening to music without headphones on at all. They are sealed (I need that for my recording studio). Open designs achieve realism a little easier, I think, but I had to have sealed. ($175 at FullCompass)

"nearly perfect for my application"

Well, what are you using them on? I like Dumond's story about sticking one of them in the f-hole of a bass. I got really interested in them and their flat response after reading the article as well. The only conditions he adds are things like the 'right instrument, the right room'. So good they embarrass less than great sounds is what it sounded like to me.

Thanks for the tip on the Beyerdynamics.

I am recording fingerstyle acoustic guitar. The human ear is an amazing organ, and a good acoustic guitar has a very delicate and complex sound. Especially in the midrange. Many of the mikes I've tried have "the highs" and "the lows" and sound "good", but there was always something missing. The word that always comes to my mind for what is missing is "leathery texture". I've experimented with mikes, mike placement, preamps, EQ, room acoustics, compressors....

When the smoke all clears it seems like it really should be obvious that what I needed was a simply "deadly accurate" mike, with dead-nuts-flat frequency response and fast transient response. With the QTC1s, it does seem to be as simple as setting them in front of you and playing. What you hear is what you get. There is no "searching for sweet spots", etc. That's why they say "the right instrument...etc." A mediocre instrument will continue to sound EXACTLY that way (well, you can add effects)

But I will refrain from getting TOO high on them until I have really worked with them a while. Maybe I will find a flaw. I have enough experience with music gear to know that everything seems great when it is brand new. Sometimes the flaws and inadequacies don't reveal themselves until later.

Oh yeah: Flaw #1: They are so hot that you have to turn all your mike PREs down to about 1/2 to 3/4 of their usual value. :)
Flaw #2: They are omni, so you wouldn't want to use them to keep closely spaced instruments separated in the mix, unless you mike really close. But that isn't on my list of concerns.
Flaw #3: Higher self-noise than most mikes. There is a definite white noise hiss that only becomes noticeable as notes fade away to near silence. Compressors make this more noticeable, and I do like to use a little compression. I use an expander/gate to make this less obvious. That requires some careful settings.

Peace,
Rick

Great response, thanks. Now I'm way more interested. I'll check the specs on self-noise. I wager it isn't more than my AKG C-1000. Do you have two of them?

Noise of QTCs

The QTCs noise is 22db A weighted;, pretty standard. Most likely, that noise is "room-noise"; very common for any high-sensitivity mic in a rather live room; especially omnis when not really close miking.

Damn nice mics by the way. Anyone wanna buy me a matched-pair? I'm still waiting for a ribbon mic first, though. A AEA, Royer, or Coles will due. Thanks.

Yeah Coop, I just sold my C1000s. Good budget mics back in their days. But now days with the Oktava MC-012s from The Sound Room only around...

Thanks

Thanks Dobro - great link. Just added another 2oook to my wish list.
