It's changed quite a bit - The monitor rise and such... Mine has a rise that sits on top (and I modified the rise).

But geez, $80?!? Hell, you can patch the damn hole... Or leave it...

John I see you've got what looks like a Motorola Surfboard cable modem there. Just out of interest, are you running your internet connection to more than 1 PC?

Ok John. You messed with me. I start my build this weekend. Should take a day to do. I am gonna put in two lower racks along with the desk racks. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

I am doing mine from scratch. 2 - 4x8 sheets of Birch cut to spec. This will be nice. :)
Just gotta figger out where to put the phone now. LOL

Estimate cost with rack rail to run me about 125 total

Seems like a lot has changed since you posted a pix last time, huh John? I see you have a dish-eye lense shot and flat-panel monitors, amoung other things. Looking great!!

7-String - Absolutely. ;) I try to keep it pretty clean, but it's Dance Show Season - So it's a wee bit unorganized right now... At least it appears that way.

Giga - Thanks, yeah, small changes here and there add up. My, this is an old thread, though...

HDHM - That's a nice unit (the TrippLite) that I'm sure would handle your whole rig easily.

Those switches are non-conditioned (simple switching) that I think I got at Guitar Center for around $30 (they run through filtering and conditioning first).

Wow - I never answered BullsHit: Yes.

Thanks MM, I ask about them on my next GC visit

Look in the lighting (?) room I would imagine...

Now Massive, you know that GML 8200 is not designed for mastering. You need the 9500. I mean, how can you possibly keep a stereo image without the detented controls. You are just going to have to get yourself the 9500, and send that 8200 to me. I promise to put it to good use while tracking.

(Sorry, but that is just the ONE piece of high end gear I most miss using, even over the SSL's and Studers. That is, bar none, my absolute favorite EQ on the planet.)

Somewhere I promised photos of my budget-friendly "Frankendesk" - Here's one...

I've noticed in your pic and other studios that I have seen that you all sit fairly close to your speakers. And since I know you guys have your s&^t together it must be ok. Any detriment to being a bit farther back? And also, should the monitors be set up in any particular configuration, i.e., distance from the listening point, distance apart, height, angle, etc.?

Nice job, John! Someday...

Light - I hear ya... But man... A $7,000 upgrade from a $5,000 EQ... Whoa...

I don't mind the extra $1,000 on the VariMu or the STC8 for the detented knobs, but $7,000... Although certainly, it'd be schveet...

7String - it looks fairly deceiving... I float around from 5-6 feet from the boxes. That desk is so (uh... massive?) - It's over 8 feet from tip-to-tip, and deeper than it ever appears in photos for some reason.

I certainly wouldn't want to be any closer, but it's a nice distance for the most part.

Well, like I said, I'm just jealous. It is SO nice to work with an EQ which does exactly what it is supposed to, and ONLY what it is supposed to. Much better (for instance) than Mackie EQ, which not only doesn't do what it is supposed to, but then does about 50 other things as well.

Of course, for $5,000...

Don't think that I haven't tossed around the idea of throwing some Grayhill switches in there either... If I was better at "hacking" electronics, I probably would've ripped it apart already. :o

I'd have to be pretty fucking good at hacking electronics before I'd fuck with anything from GML. His stuff is just a little too expensive for me to want to risk it.
