I am recording with digi001, which has two inputs with preamps on the front. I am recording my friends band in a garage (recording every one at once thats the only way the will let me do it). I need more preamps for the mics I am using, but I don't have alot of cash and am not too concerned about the greatest sound. I can only seem to find preamps with only a few channels and they are VERY EXPENSIVE$.

I cannot use a mixer because It is too loud and I cannot hear the mix over the loud music. If someone knows of a cheap mixer out there that will allow me to use the preamps and send each individual channel to the digi001 breakout box please let me know.

I am very new too recording and have been learning by trial and error if something I am saying is dumb and does not make sense please let me know

HELP!?!?

mm...

There are a couple things at issue here...
If your friend will only let you record everyone at once... And you only have two inputs... AND your stuck in the same room....

- Sounds like the thing you need is just a mixer with inputs on it so that you can record all instruments separately... and then mix a stereo signal straight through the Digi001...

- I'd tell the guy you're going to run the cables outside on a sunny day... Have him setup the band IN the garage... Run the cables out front of the garage door... THEN CLOSE THE DOOR>>>> If it's still too loud, then put on headphones... That way you can get a better mix...

- Your only other alternative is to have the band play the song 5 or 6 times... And record each piece individually while the others play... Mic the Bass first, then record it... Then they play again - mic the Guitar and record it... and So forth...

Either way you're kind of fighting a losing battle... It's better to have multiple inputs on your computer interface...

Hope this helps...

Is he just looking for a demo? or what???

if its a one off, just hire a few more preamps. or a mixer.

dont worry about mixing with the mixer, just use the direct-outs from each channel into your digi-001. just adjust each channels gain so you are getting a good clean level on the recorder and that should do the job. as far as mixer brands go, I wont recommend anything, since its been a while since I've looked at mixers, but if it has direct outs, thats what you want.

What Sbaitso said........

You digi only has 2 preamps, but has a total of 8 inputs. Get a mixer, the you can mic all the instruments and mixdown later in ProTools. I know they are your "friend", but tell them you NEED a mixer. They will eventually shell out for one.

Does anyone make a very Basic (by basic I mean cheap) Multi channel preamp like the top quater of a mixer?

How cheap??

Preamps can get very expensive.

Behringer makes cheap mixers, but you could probably find something better for cheap used.

M-audio makes some cheap preamps, Audio Buddy (2 ch) goes new for about $80. DMP3 goes new for ~$200 (2 ch).

Rock on!

If you ned multiple preamps, something like a used Mackie 1604VLZ would be what I'd look for. Sixteen mic pre's, eight direct outputs that are post EQ/fader and inserts on all channels so you have 16 direct outs pre EQ/fader, four sub groups. You could get into one for $400-$500.

If you really don't want a mixer, there are some rack units you could get. But how many pre's do you need? If you need 6 or less it'd actually be cheaper to just buy a Behringer mixer with 6 pre's. If you need more than 6 it gets expensive (meaning >$200). Here's a rack-mount 8-channel pre system:

It's $200. That's the cheapest I've seen for something like that...no tubes though, of course.

they're doing you a favor. a $25 "tube"-ish channel would probably be hideous.

Use the two preamps you already have, and just record them live in stereo until you have the $$$ to get what you need.

Cool, Thanks for all the help.

I now know my options now I just have to decide and then go shopping :)
